I'm an idiot. I should've posted this earlier since only when Tom Merritt is on vacation is it even possible for this to be a Daily Pick:
Yeah, I know, the host of Daily Tech News Show is my Daily Pick, yet he is. I've listened to Tom back during his Buzz Out Loud days, then teamed up with Molly Wood (who just happens to be pictured at the bottom of the picture, no, not the one with beard). It was just before they aired BOL #500, which was parody episode, 500 years of BOL, "flashing back" to 500 years of BOL. The beauty part was it was consistent to the technology of the times (and did a similar April Fool's prank, set like a year or several prior and again consistent to the tech news of the time).
Why? Commitment to taking the subject, technology reportering, seriously, even if Tom doesn't take himself seriously. That's part of Tom's humbleness. He's super smart in reporting on and analyzing complex tech news / events but doesn't make you feel super dumb listening to him.
Speaking of analyzing and editorializing, Tom doesn't pretend he doesn't have opinions on the subjects he's reporting on, but he's genuine fair in considering opposing views, giving the benefit of the doubt even playing devil's advocate.
While he wants to attract an audience, he refuses to do clickbait titles or ones in poor taste. He admits when he doesn't know something and cede to those more knowledgeable on a subject. Tom's also generous not just to co-hosts and guests but even producers working behind the scenes to keep the show running on a technical level. Veronica, Jason, Jennie are well-known producers on his shows because he welcomes their opinions and they have gone on to do their own shows. While Tom is more than capable of reporting on and editorializing serious subjects, he leans more on the side of fun or at least a light touch, even in the wake of disappointing news (as amply demonstrated by the myriad podcasts he co-hosts and guests on).
I could blather on and on about a fellow Illinoisan Gen-X-ers, but I'll cut it short to say, Tom Merritt, my literally Daily (Tech News reporter) Pick -- and I know I'm not alone.

P.S. Tom likes to say he can only go on vacation because of wonderful backers and fans of the show. I agree and would add Tom's wonderful friends and contributors who do a great job of reporting and commenting on tech news.
