Just a note re emojis (which I kinda use) - one of the issues with them is that they're not standard, so what you send from one phone/browser/OS, etc. isn't certain to be what's received on the other end, depending on THEIR phone/browser/OS, etc.

BTW, as a journalist, I'm fine with them if they help people express ideas/emotions/feelings more clearly. And yes, in general I am a "write well" snob...

Keep up the good work. (Was listening to this at 6am down here in Australia :-)

I enjoyed the discussion of EU and search.  +Danny Sullivan wrote an interesting and thorough article that analyzes the objections to Google with respect to shopping.  He does a lot to explain some of the subtleties of the arguments.

My look at the EU charges against Google in terms of shopping search and how they might be resolved.
The EU has raised four concerns about how Google has dominated shopping search. A close look at each charge and possible fixes that might emerge.

So there I was watching a shmaltzy movie about two older people falling in love, staring Shirley MacLaine and  Christopher Plummer  and called "Elsa and  Fred" when I heard this familiar voice.  About 30 mins into the movie Fred (Plummer) is watching a program on a huge console TV when his friend played by George Segal interrupts and pulls the cord on the TV. The brief shot of the TV before going black was of Tom Merrit sitting in his studio in LA. Clearly written (if you freeze the frame) is Tech News Today - Tom Merrit!   Yes indeed the voice I heard was Tom's.  The character background that was revealed in the movie said Fred was in telecommunications for 40 years so it was in character, but there were no other geeky signs or paraphernalia. The TV seemed more like a throwback, IMHO.

Hey guys, I just listened to DTNS 2424 and enjoyed your discussion of Google glass.

Western companies are often understandably criticized for releasing products that don't seem to have a monetization potential or seem poorly conceived. However I think Google Glass falls into a different category than something mainstream like Android.

Back in the 80s and 90s I ran a company that did a lot of business with large Japanese companies. When I visited their factories, the CEO's would proudly show off their R&D efforts, which often included products that would never see the light of day or would only sell a few units. For example, at that time, they showed me an eye tracking device even though the company did not make products in that field. However, they did make industrial machine vision products so the underlying technology could be applied to other products.
They also showed  laser scanning microscopes and other technologies that would be sold but would never make a profit.

They said that they learned from these products and could use this to help them in creating future products. So their investments in time, money and human resources was sound.

My contention is that big companies like Google, Microsoft and Apple are pushing forward the state-of-the-art through these largely R&D efforts, learning as they go and all the while smirking as pundits complain about failed products.

As a postscript, I still personally condemn companies for releasing mainstream products that are ill-conceived and poorly debugged. You don't want to sell millions of widgets that don't work as advertised. These fall into a totally different category than the R&D projects/products.
