July is African American Bone Marrow Awareness Month. If you haven't yet put yourself on the registry, you should really consider it.

For years black hair has been more than just hair in American culture.  It’s been a suppressed racial characteristic, a symbol of political protest and political change and most recently the cause of some very awkward and offensive situations. We, at Un’ruly, have delved deep into the question and have shared our thoughts on the Huffington Post.  But to take things even further, we’re exploring the tactile fascination with black hair by holding an interactive public art exhibit in NYC.

"The Women of Color Sexual Health Network (WOCSHN) working group and collective was established in 2009, when 18 women of Color came together to strategize ways to increase representation in the field and especially at AASECT (American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists). WOCSHN has made numerous efforts to ensure women and people of Color working in the sexology and sexuality fields are represented, supported, and included. We are educators, medical providers, counselors, activists, and writers who are committed to mentoring, working, and changing the way sex/uality is discussed about our communities.

Members of the WOCSHN have submitted several presentations to AASECTs 2013 National Conference, many of which were accepted. To have as many WOCSHN members present and able to present our original work, members are in need of supporting funds. All of the funds raised will go directly to each member to cover their needs to attend the conference. Without these funds they will not be able to attend.*

Below is an outline of our needs to have 5 WOCSHN members attend.

Plane $2050 (for 5 members)
Transportation $250 (to/from airport and hotel)
Hotel $2000 (double rooms)
Per Diem $1000 (3 meals a day)
Registration $1850 (speaker reduced registration fee)
Total: $7150

For Bloggers:

A few blogging tips I just discovered to share:

1. I got another take down request of an image I downloaded from a royalty free site, so be mindful that many of those sites permit free upload with just a click verification that the person uploading has all the rights to the image.

Therefore, to protect yourself, we may want to figure out some system of noting which site you got your image from so if you are contacted w/copyright request, you will know where to send the copyright owner so you are not on the hook. I am going to do this by adding a suffix after my description to the image upon upload. That way I will know its source: IG, FB, MorgueFile, FreeDigitalImages, etc.

I think as this particular blog gets more popular, it is getting a lot of attention so alas a by product of growth is more scrutiny. oy!

2. I discovered recently that you can embed images from Instagram onto your blog using IG's desktop version of the app via its share button.

3.  I also recently discovered that how to add your IG and Twitter pages as a Tabs on your Blog's Facebook page. Just google the instructions. They are very simple to follow. If I find them again, I'll add them to this post unless someone does first.

4. Bloggers who put up photo collages of various subjects as blog post headers: Use your mobile phone's collage app to put together images then send the finished collage to yourself in an email. It's a quicker way to creating the collage to using desktop apps or  Microsoft desktop services like PowerPoint. Time is money!

For those in the NYC area, inMotion is an amazing org that provides legal services to low-income women, especially survivors of domestic violence.  I'm doing some pro-bono work with them now and am truly amazed:
inMotion offers hope to low-income women who need free legal services in matrimonial, family and immigration law. Our volunteer lawyers work to protect women and their children, preventing tragedies and changing lives.

I have decided it is time to pursue a graduate degree and I am looking for ways to fund it. I have been searching the internet for scholarships and fellowships and I came across this one.
I do not meet the qualifications, but maybe you know someone who is over 35 and wishes to go to school for a technical, vocational, associates, or bachelor's degree.

The application for the 2014 school year will be available on November 1, 2013.
Jeannette Rankin Women's Scholarship Fund helps women end cycles of poverty, underemployment, and abuse, offering a brighter future to families and communities for generations to come. Join us to create more opportunities for low-income women to grow and prosper through education.
