Retrieved IVC Filter
Photo

At Vascular.ae we recently removed an IVC filter from a 62 year old male who had to have the IVC filter placed because he could not receive blood thinners for his DVT and Pulmonary embolism (PE). The reason was that he had to undergo major open surgery, which could have had major bleeding complications had he been on blood thinners.
However once the surgery was completed and the risk of bleeding had passed, we removed the filter ( Retrieved IVC filter).
The process took about 30 minutes under local anesthesia and the patient went home within a few hours.
The most common adverse events associated with IVC filters include IVC thrombosis, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), access site thrombosis, filter migration, caval penetration, and filter fracture.
If the patient’s transient risk for PE has passed, the risk-benefit profile resulting from the analysis begins to favor filter removal between 1 and 2 months, assuming retrieval is possible.

If you develop a blood clot (DVT) during pregnancy, the current recommendations are to be treated with the appropriate dose of Low Molecular Weight Heparin, rather than other anti-coagulants. This should  be stopped 24 hours  BEFORE delivery and restarted to continue for 6 weeks (minimum) after delivery.

If one is attempting to become pregnant, perform frequent pregnancy tests so as to know when to STOP warfarin and switch to low molecular weight heparin (Enoxaparin). (CHEST 2012; 38S 3.0.2)
