One of the Key Ingredients that separates an average Softball Player from a Great Softball Player is without a Doubt...

Mental Toughness.

But what exactly is Mental Toughness???

Well...Mental Toughness is a combination of Mental Skills that not many Athletes learn during their training years in Youth Sports because there is a Huge lack of Sports Psychology Education amongst our society.

Many believe that Mental Toughness is something Athletes are Born With...Not something that can be Learned.

And that couldn't be further from the Truth!!!

Mental Toughness can be learned and acquired by anyone who has the Desire to Improve.

Fielding tips

The Line Drive – Pitching Drill

This drill will help the pitcher improve her ability to catch a hard hit line drive and throw to specific bases.

The pitcher pitches a ball which is then caught by the catcher.

As the ball gets near the catcher, the coach hits a second ball as a line drive to the pitcher, who catches it and throws it to second base.

Repeat the sequence with the pitcher throwing to third base.

Repeat the entire drill ten times.

Target Practice – Hitting Drill

This drill is an effective way to work on ball placement and contact point when hitting the ball deeper in the strike zone.

Set up a tee in the desired location that the batter feels the need to improve on

Set up cones in the field to designate zones that the ball should be hit to depending on the pitch.

Then have the batter hit the ball aiming for the specified area and adjust swing accordingly

When the player becomes more advanced set up tees 20 to 40 feet in a specific direction and aim to knock the ball off. Adjust distance according to increased improvement

Run, Turn, Dive, Run, Slide – Base Running Drill

This drill is a fun way to practice all basic base running fundamentals.

All players will begin at home plate. The players will take a swing and then take off to first as if to run to second, but only take a 3 step lead off and then dive back to the base.

The runner will quickly stand up and run to second, pop-up slide into the bag, take a 3 step lead off, and dive back to second base.

The runner will quickly recover again and take off to third, hook slide to the right of the bag to avoid a tag, recover, take a 3 step lead off, and dive back to the base.

Then the runner will recover and take off into a sprint through home plate and back to the end of the line.

There should not be any break time for runners during this drill.
After the runner in front takes off to second base then the next runner may begin.

Shadow Drill – Catching Drill

This drill is great for younger and older catchers to maintain being in excellent shape especially for warm weather and a long season that can take it’s toll on a catcher.

Two catchers will begin in full gear facing each other.

One catcher will begin as the leader and simulate typical catching motions(squatting, dropping to the knees for a wild pitch, catching the pitch and throwing down a runner) while the other catcher “shadows” all of the motions.

After about three minutes take a small break and have the other catcher be the leader.
