These mini-season releases for Voltron are starting to get more and more annoying. There are developments made in the narrative, sure, but they're baby steps. It's fortunate that the writers manage to make something just barely intriguing enough to go on, but at this point it would be reasonable for people to lose interest. The show is becoming pretty easy to forget.

So here are some thoughts, before I forget:

ā€¢ This benevolent Lotor is unsettling for longtime Voltron fans. A departure from the tropey obsessive, psychotic, but ultimately inept character is nice to see, but for many of us there's something in the back of our minds screeching, "Don't trust him!" So what we're really waiting to find out is how he responds to his true parentage. Although we have signs of his inner nature based on the "White Lion" episode.

ā€¢ On the other hand, a totally good and badass Lotor sounds a bit too much like something from a fanfic by someone who really enjoyed his bishounen looks. Just a thought.

ā€¢ I loved the bit about sending Pidge's dad back to Earth and multiple characters getting "space dust" in their eyes.

ā€¢ My daughter and I similarly enjoyed the fun the team had with a reprogrammed centurian while touring the Galra ship.

ā€¢ It's nice to finally have confirmation that Shiro is somehow a double agent, even if it's despite himself. I loved how the shot was framed when Lotor talked about how Haggar is to be watched because she'll have a puppet working for her. Of course it's Shiro, as if it weren't already obvious. And then made even more obvious (this is a show for kids, after all) by the POV shots Haggar sees from Shiro's eyes. Looks like we may get Keith back in the Black Lion despite the storytelling setback.

ā€¢ What I'm hoping for with Keith's mom is more worldbuilding than anything else. Right now she's an unnecessary character. Yeah, great, he has now met his mom and can feel closer to his Galra heritage or whatever, but this is an opportunity to talk about where the Galra has sent its people - and why Earth hasn't been invaded yet.

ā€¢ Didn't there used to be space mice on the ship? What happened to them?

ā€¢ What's really cool is the de-emphasis on Voltron itself in these episodes. Yeah, sure, they form Voltron and do badass things, but Voltron is barely in the episodes. This series isn't just about a giant robot that clobbers. This series is about people interfering with and hopefully resolving a conflict in the galaxy.

ā€¢ If they're doing any level of foreshadowing, Lance is really going to be stepping up. If he isn't responsible for revealing Shiro's nature/issues, it's a wasted opportunity. He became the pilot of Red Lion based on his willingness to back Keith. This falls in line with that.

ā€¢ I am purposefully removed from any of the online chatter about the series. Are there Keith vs. Shiro debates? Do I even want to poke my head in there?

ā€¢ It's interesting that in reading the notes of a Honerva as she slowly becomes Haggar they note that she is becoming increasily paranoid and crazy. Why? Because Haggar seems to be the only character on the show with any idea of what is going on, and she's controlling everything from affar with such aptitude that she seems like the only character that really matters in the story anymore - and they barely give her any screentime. My favorite character is certainly Keith based on nostalgia and an appreciate for characters with angst, but Haggar really should be the favorite here.
