"I wanted to create a sleek, modern look that would make the most of this small space. A kitchen is an integral part of the home and the design should always reflect this. Keep the rest of the house in mind when planning your kitchen, especially in smaller spaces. The kitchen should be more than just a place to cook. "It's wise to have a good understanding of the construction process this way you know what is possible and understand the various materials being used, their advantages and limitations. "And finally: think about how you'll use the space afterwards, so you can ensure that your design is practical. A good design must always be beautiful and functional." · Tao opted for an integrated dishwasher hidden behind a cupboard door. "For budget reasons and as it doesn't detract from the design, I recommend freestanding appliances, such as the fridge and stove in this layout. · To maximise storage space, Tao included cupboards under the breakfast bar, took the cabinetry up to the ceiling and included drawers, where possible. The drawers extend fully and everything inside is easily accessible. · The breakfast counter is a large freestanding unit but it isn't on castors (its size would create stability issues). Should the layout of the lounge/dining area change, the freestanding unit could be used as a server. Because it is made from solid oak, the counter looks organic and modern. · The countertops are engineered stone which is very durable while the cupboards /ZZ small space as they don't protrude into the working space. Cutting the bottles 1 Use a glass-cutting jig (see `Alternative' box) to cut the bottles at the desired height. We set it to cut as low down as possible, giving us enough room for the fitting and bulb. Position your hands across from one another so that you can apply enough force. Slowly turn the bottle while pressing it against the cutting blade. Maintain continuous pressure as you rotate, and stop as soon as the score line meets itself. Resist the temptation to go over the score line again; this will only lead to a messy break and will also dull the cutting blade. 2 Pour boiling water into the bottle. NOTE Use a funnel to make sure the water falls to the bottom without touching the sides of the bottle. 3 Allow the glass to heat up until it's hot to the touch, then use a high-pressure water jet to spray cold water all along the score line while slowly rotating the bottle. You may hear a slight `splitting' sound. The bottle should break along this score line. 4 Smooth the flat edges by polishing them on carbide tungsten waterpaper. Do this under a thin layer of water to assist the process and contain the glass dust. Lightly sand the sharp edges of the bottles.

The trumpets and bugles of European angst about the money being splashed around by Chinese football must sound particularly hollow across the sports-obsessed continents of South America and Africa. Clubs in Brazil and Argentina, Senegal and Ivory Coast, have been powerless for decades as their finest players are lured away by the extravagant wages paid by wealthy teams in Europe. They have long known one of the game's bitter truths: professional footballers are forever mercenaries who follow the money wherever it takes them. When Belgium international midfielder Axel Witsel opted to join Tianjin Quanjian rather than Italian champions Juventus, he gave an honest answer for his decision, saying: "On the one hand there was a top club like Juve, but on the other there was a crucial offer for my family that I couldn't turn down." Witsel will reportedly be paid £15million per annum for five years. With bonuses, it might well be a £100m deal overall. The 28-year-old has been viciously condemned on social media in Belgium and elsewhere, yet isn't that the worst kind of hypocrisy? After all, how many of those critics would turn down such riches? Some observers argue that moving to China represents a cop out in a player's career, a signal of failure at the highest level. Yet the former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Paulinho moved to Guangzhou Evergrande and has since won back his place in Brazil's national team. Players like Witsel will not necessarily suffer in the international arena by moving to China and the more stars who make the journey the less likely that will be. Perhaps there is even a counter-intuitive argument that being free from the rigours of a full European club season will make them more effective performers at a World Cup. In reality, the only surprising aspect of China's emergence as ambitious financial competitors in the world's most popular sport is that it has taken so long. A similar process has been occurring for many years among Olympic disciplines, with the Chinese rising steadily towards the top of the medal tables at each successive Games. Importing high-quality players and coaches is a crucial part of the long-term plan to make Chinese football a superpower of the globe in the way that their economy already is. Luiz Felipe Scolari, Felix Magath, Andre Villas-Boas, Manuel Pellegrini and Fabio Cannavaro are all currently in charge of club sides, while players tempted in the past couple of months include Carlos Tevez, Oscar and Jackson Martinez. It is predicted a Chinese club will smash the world transfer record in the next year, even though there are moves to curb some of the extravagant spending. The only real question is how long it will take for the Chinese Super League to become a global player. Money is also being invested in the grassroots game, and given the Olympic example it must be likely that high-quality Chinese players will develop within a generation. The influence of Chinese money on the game is not just in Beijing and Shanghai; it is investing in great swathes of traditional European football, with new Chinese owners taking over at Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers in England, for example. China's richest man, Wang Jialin, has bought a 20 per cent stake in Atletico Madrid, has an interest in IPL cricket and is reported to have covetous eyes for Disney. European clubs have been making strenuous efforts to win fans and build a commercial platform in China, but they are also beginning to understand that it won't prevent the first serious challenge to their financial supremacy of the football world.

I am not one of those people who
obsessively tries to protect their gear
from scratches and knocks. Somewhat
the reverse, in fact: I rather enjoy
mistreating my possessions. I like to
think it reminds them who owns whom.
I wasnt generally so blas about these things.
As a child, I handled my computing devices
with nearly reverential respect. I really used
to pack up my ZX Spectrum into its box each
night after Id finished using it. Love to play rugby with it
