In the existing electronic products, lithium-ion batteries are using non-aqueous electrolyte. It is understood that the research team has developed a kind of water electrolytic battery in 2015, but because the voltage is only 3V maximum, and the electrode performance will be affected by the impact of aqueous solution. After the re-design of the product, the research team combined with the US Army Research Laboratory Xu Kang and other scientists, to develop this upgraded version of water-based lithium battery.



The researchers through a new type of polymer coating, it has a special drainage, it is applied to the electrode, the water molecules can not be close to the electrode surface. After the first charge, the gel breaks down into a stable interface, isolating the electrode from the electrolyte, preventing the decomposition of the water molecules at the operating voltage. The technology not only improves the battery storage and charge and discharge performance, but also completely avoid the risk of organic solvent electrolyte easy to explode.


Although the new battery operating voltage has reached the basic commercial level, but compared with the current lithium-ion battery, there are many places to upgrade. Such as the cost of zinc battery material is relatively high, and charge and discharge can only reach 50 to 100 times.
