FALLACY: "We Need To Test On Animals" ~ yvfi.ca/testing/r

Everyone knows we "need to" test cosmetics, medicines, and other products on animals in order to make certain they are safe for humans, right?

Of course, the primary ethical considerations we must address when examining the necessity of vivisection are the right of animals to be free of experimentation for human purposes and the value of tests performed upon them. In the case of cosmetics testing, it is both selfish and cruel to insist that animals suffer and die for the sake of vanity. A similar argument can be made for household products, which are not necessary for human life. Moreover, there are many effective alternatives to animal testing for both cosmetics and household products, which can and should be used instead.

Everyone has lots of useful things to share about this topic; the fallacy has brilliant replies on it from the +Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, +Bite Size Vegan, +Colleen Patrick-Goudreau, +Vegan Street, +Vegan Sidekick, +Sean P. O. MacCath-Moran, the +American Anti-Vivisection Society, +Dr Hadwen Trust, the +Vivisection Information Network, +Dan "Bizarro" Piraro, and +RichieFruitbat.

Have we missed anything awesome that should also be included on this one!? Do let us know!

FALLACY: "Going Vegan Makes No Difference" ~ yvfi.ca/difference/r

It's dreadfully easy to believe that just because you can't do everything, it's reasonable to do nothing. But of COURSE you can't do everything -- thankfully, YOU don't need to. All YOU need to do is your part, and by doing that little bit along with everyone else, you're making a huge and tangible difference. In particular, you're having a very direct impact on the lives of animals who otherwise would have been killed, so good on you for making the world a better place.

The lovely list of resources on this fallacy-page are sourced from articles by +The Vegan Scholar, metric whacks of memes by +Vegan Street, a video with piercing insight by +Colleen Patrick-Goudreau, two of +RichieFruitbat's offerings, both humorous and serious items from +Vegan Sidekick, and a whack of knowledge-bites from the +Bite Size Vegan.

What other articles or memes are there out there which address this issue? Let us know about them so we can add them to the page!

FALLACY: "Vegan Parenting Is Brainwashing"

It must surely be a form of child abuse to instill your own values in your child... Right?!

Of course, parents are responsible for the physical well-being of their children, and they are also responsible for providing ethical guidance. Evidence shows that a plant-based diet is healthy for people of all life stages, including children, so vegan parents are following appropriate nutritional guidelines. Veganism is the philosophical position that using animals for human benefit is unethical, so vegan parents are simply teaching their children compassion through veganism, much as any parent might teach a child to be kind.

These ideas are addressed further on the Your Vegan Fallacy Is site at yvfi.ca/brainwashing/r along with responses by +Marla Rose (a.k.a. the "Vegan Feminist Agitator"), +Bite Size Vegan, +Vegan Street, +Colleen Patrick-Goudreau, +Sean P. O. MacCath-Moran, +YouHippies, +Vegan Sidekick, and +Skool of Vegan.

Want To Try Out A Healthy & Ethical Lifestyle Change?

I hope that you do! And if so, I'm facilitating a challenge to go 7 whole days while exploring the benefits a plant-based lifestyle! Participation is easy and free, and if you're not already a user of Habit RPG, then you'll have the bonus of getting to check out a fairly cool motivational tool (one which I've been using to great effect for a while now; I don't work for them or anything, I'm just a happy user). =oD

See the shared thread here for instructions on how to join up. This challenge will run from August 25th to 31st.

Habit RPG vs. 7 Day Vegan Challenge!
(Aug 25th to 31st)

I've been using the habitrpg.com site now for about a year, and I really love it. It prompts me daily to engage those activities that I need to be making habits of, and it "gamifies" my doing so with funzy rewards. One of the interesting social components of the site is the "challenges" which people can participate in; e.g. emptying your inbox daily, or learning a new language, etc. Besides bettering yourself, the point of engaging these challenges is to win the "gems" awarded with them (these being the currency of the website, which allows you to purchase funzy things for your HabitRPG character).

In this case, I've created a 7 Day Vegan Challenge for folks to participate in. If you're interested in viewing it (or in joining in on it), you'll need to create an account (for free) on the habitrpg.com site, after which you can find the vegan challenge on the challenges page: goo.gl/rfNWI4

If you check out the site, let me know what you think of it! For my part, its become a daily part of my toolkit for getting things done. =o)
