I use ON1 Photo RAW 2018.1 with a digital asset manager, and one of the things that bugs me about Photo RAW is the inability to open in the Browser module when opened via the DAM. Instead, the ON1 app opens in Layers, requiring the saving of a PSD layers file to apply the Develop and Effects modules on the way to exporting a JPG file for web upload. This adds unwanted steps to the workflow and utilizes additional disk space.

I would also like to see improvements in the black-and-white film presets, which are unchanged from the Photoshop plugin-only days of ON1. When I want a black and white film look, I usually turn to Alien Skin Exposure or DxO FilmPack and then finish in Photo RAW. Here I used FilmPack to simulate the look of Fomapan 200 Creative film with finishing touches in Photo RAW.

I recently received a response from ON1 Support, indicating the first update to Photo RAW 2018 will be released late this month. Teaser videos of new features are appearing in the ON1 Photo RAW blog.

Custom Sort – 2018.1 for the first time will enable the user to perform a custom sort based on selection from a list of criteria or just drag and drop the thumbnails in the Browse module to different positions. Browse will remember the custom drag-and-drop order even after you choose a new sort from the criteria sort menu.

Tethered Shooting – Studio photographers have been asking for this feature, which will support Nikon and Canon cameras with others to be added later. Tethered shooting allows you to get your images to your computer instantly and to be able to view large versions of each of those images.

Soft Proofing – Another feature to be added in 2018.1 is Soft Proofing, the ability to see how your photo will look when printed with a specific printer on an identified type paper. Soft Proofing allows the user to set a Gamut Warning to identify colors that cannot be reproduced on the paper, allowing readjustment of settings to compensate for the out-of-gamut colors.

Smart Import – A feature that should have been include in last fall’s introduction of ON1 RAW 2018, Smart Import will allow the user to backup, rename and add metadata as part of the download process. The feature includes use of metadata presets, which will eliminate a lot of retyping of duplicate information. The user will also be able to use photo presets on import, if desired.

These features come at the request of users participating in the ON1 Photo RAW Project. The company continues to improve this important alternative to Lightroom based on customer response, putting ON1 at the head of the line for meeting customer needs.

For those of us who need to apply GPS data to our photos, there remains a need for a drag-and-drop map for that. According to the RAW Project, the mapping feature is under consideration.

I also found a bug in the Mac version of ON1 Photo RAW 2018. The preferences setup allows the option of opening the standalone version of ON1 Photo RAW 2018 in the Browser or in Layers. With the Browser option chosen, however, Photo RAW opens in Layers from my digital asset manager and a couple of other third-party browsers I tested. I hope the ON1 engineers will have that problem corrected when 2018.1 is released later this month.

Photo RAW process more than just raw images, by the way. The image in this posting was an Olympus jpeg with a little tweaking in ON1 Photo RAW 2018

Customization of the Split Tone Effect provided a method of application of an orange-teal movie color grading to this image taken at the Dallas Arboretum. All of this non-destructive, of course.

An that began with an image shot with an old SLR lens. Of course ON1 Photo RAW played a role in processing the finished product.
