Nerdist Podcast #803: Rob Reiner
Friday, 6th May 2016

Ever want to feel intimidated? It's the feeling that washes over you when you read the Wikipedia page of someone like Elon Musk, Eddie Izzard, Robert Wise... The breadth and the depth of a persons work. That's what you feel when you realise exactly what Rob Reiner has been the instigator of throughout his incredible career. What a guy.

"Rob Reiner (This Is Spinal Tap, When Harry Met Sally, The Princess Bride) talks to Chris and Matt about working with so many comedy legends, his time writing on The Smother Brothers and he tells a few stories of his father's friendship with Mel Brooks. He then talks about how he first read The Princess Bride and the journey to making it into a movie, and his documentary Being Charlie which is based on the real life addiction his son went through!"

Nerdist Podcast #804: Jodie Foster
Tuesday, 10th May 2016

Chris has already taken to social media to say that this conversation with Ms. Foster is 'one of his favourite [sic] podcast conversations of all time'... And it's easy to understand why - what a fascinating guest with a truly astonishing CV under her belt. And she's clearly not done yet! Jodie Foster is one of those underrated people who everyone will miss and appreciate fully when she's eventually shuffles off this mortal coil, many many moons from now...

"Jodie Foster (Silence Of The Lambs, Contact, Panic Room) talks to Chris about growing up an actress, her role in Taxi Driver as a teenager and how she made sure to be responsible. She also talks about the differences between acting and directing, her insecurities and what movies she has worked on have been her favorites. See the latest movie she directed Money Monster, in theaters May 13!"

Nerdist Podcast #802: Nikolaj Coster-Waldau
Tuesday, 26th April 2016

Ahead of the launch of the +Game of Thrones Sixth Season, the Kingslayer himself, the way-too-attractive-for-his-own-damn-good Nikolaj Coster-Waldau steps up to the mic and chats to the boys about... well, they try and talk about any else but GOT!

(Nope, I'm seriously struggling to rush to put these up anymore; with a one-a-week release schedule, I could be a couple behind and two posts later, I'm caught up. The metabolism for the 'pod has slowed to a crawl, it appears that the other workload - and, indeed, the natural demands of a new relationship - have kerbed our beloved Nerdist Podcast. Oh, well. At least the YouTube channels doing okay, right? Right?)

"Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Game of Thrones, Oblivion) talks to Chris and Matt about what shows he watched growing up in Denmark, how the rest of the world views Americans and Matt won’t stop talking about the new Shake Shack in Hollywood. Nikolaj then talks about growing up in a small Danish farming town, what made him want to be an actor and what makes Jaime Lannister likable. They also talk about the immediate success of Game of Thrones and come up with a spinoff called The Lannister Family Variety Hour!"

Nerdist Podcast #801: Chris Hemsworth and Jessica Chastain

Yup, it's one of those where the promotional train ride which barrels around for a film or tv show or whatever, happens to roll through the Nerdist 'pod recording broom cupboard and Chris spends an hour NOT talking about the film, much to the publicists delight. It's Nerdist, would they expect anything less?

"Chris Hemsworth and Jessica
Chastain talk to Chris about the weird questions that every interviewer asks, Hemsworth talks about all the deadly creatures in Australia and they talk about learning their family ancestries. They also talk about how much fun they had on set of The Huntsman: Winter's War, Hemsworth talks about having twin boys and Jessica talks about her pattern of playing dark and troubled characters. See them in The Huntsman: Winter’s War!"

Chris Hardwick  -

Our good friends at +The San Diego Comic-Con Unofficial Blog have spotted that +Chris Hardwick will be returning to the +Balboa Theatre this year...

Either way, fans of Mr. Nerdist himself will be seeing him again in San Diego, as he just announced three shows at the Balboa Theatre during SDCC.

Hardwick continues his not-so-slow domination of San Diego Comic-Con by kicking off his con on Friday, July 22 with a live show of his stand-up comedy, the Id10t Tour, at 7PM.

Then, for those who either can’t get enough Hardwick or who prefer him in a moderator role, he’ll also be bringing back his very popular Nerdist Podcast Live! show to the Balboa Theatre on Saturday, July 23.

There will be two shows this year, one at 7PM and one at 10PM, with special guests still to be announced. In years past, Hardwick has featured everyone from Game of Thrones‘ Maisie Williams, to Tom Hiddleston and Guillermo del Toro, to John Barrowman — so it’s sure to be a good time.

Tickets for all sales go on sale on Thursday, April 21 at 10AM PT for those with a special presale code, or on Friday, April 22 at 12PM PT to the general public. Tickets are $37, and you can check out The Id10t Tour, or the 7PM showing and the 10PM showing of Nerdist Podcast Live!

From the Desk Of +Chris Hardwick: Power Up!

"Yeah I bought one o these damn Pac-Man @opposuits the SECOND people started tweeting it at me with the link and commenting "you should get this". YOU'RE RIGHT. In 1980 Pac-Man was the first game that taught me that video games could be "gamed" if you learned the patterns. Within a short period of time, I was able to get up to the 9th key. THE NINTH KEY. Now bracing for the arcade equivalent of "do you even lift bro" in the comments. Anyway I love this fucking suit and I think I mastered vacuous model face pretty well. Maybe the best $109 I've ever spent. FUN FACT: in Japan the game was originally called "Puck-Man" but they changed the name for the US because they didn't want people to graffiti an "F" on the "P" on the cabinets. AND JAPAN WAS RIGHT. We absolutely would have done that."

From the Desk Of +Chris Hardwick...

"Sneak peak never before seen! This is me "leaking"? my new album cover. It was shot by @thetylershields. We had shot a bunch of other stuff that looked more like a comedy album cover but then at the last minute Tyler said, "let's shoot some close up ugly cry face ones just for the fuck of it!" When I saw this one, I knew it was the one. This special has REALLY honest, personal stories about my struggles with insecurity, anxiety, depression and the death of my father (sounds hilarious!) and this image best represented the disturbing, raw seeds under the comedy. There are also poop and dick jokes. "Funcomfortable" airs April 30th at 10/9c on +Comedy Central and is available for purchase on iTunes Tuesday May 3rd (pre-order available soon). Hope ya like it!"

Nerdist Podcast #796: Sharlto Copley
Tuesday, 29th March 2016

Team Nerdist brings to t'pod an actor who, by accident or design, has found himself at the forefront of interesting and challenging cinema, from experimental indie fare (District 9, Chappie), to big-budget tentpole movies (The A Team, Elysium) and now genre-bending first-person actioners - Hardcore Henry.

We're only a handful of 'pods before we cross The Big Eight Oh threshold and it's great to see that Nerdist Podcast still strives to get on board the most interesting guests... Long may it continue!

"Sharlto Copley (District 9, Elysium) chats with Chris about the trailer for Hardcore Henry, crowd funding the movie and how he became an actor in South Africa. They also talk about how Sharlto came up with his character in Hardcore Henry, doing all the stunts in the movie and improvising his role in District 9! And Sharlto talks about the moment he found out he was a nerd!"

Geek & Sundry, Nerdist plan members-only 'clubhouse' service

Article by +Joan E. Solsman for +CNET

'The geeks are putting up the velvet rope.'

Geek-culture media brands +Nerdist and +Geek & Sundry plan to launch a paid membership service this year that mixes exclusive video and other content with perks such as merchandise discounts, access to offline events and the ability to essentially video-conference into a live show with the programs' stars. Their free content will remain available like it always has.

The service, called Alpha, will let members watch exclusive videos from both +Felicia Day's Geek & Sundry and +Chris Hardwick's Nerdist. Alpha hasn't set a price yet, but fans can pay either monthly or yearly, with an annual membership offering a discount.

A rash of new subscription video services have been launching in the last year, as companies big and small hope to lure in +Netflix US & Canada-like monthly payments from their most dedicated fans. Online natives like +YouTube, fellow upload site Vimeo, and online-star network +FullScreen HD all unveiled subscription tiers, while traditional TV and film companies like Comcast's NBC and Lionsgate are rolling out niche paid video options.

However, Alpha is hoping to distinguish itself from most of the marchers in the subscription video parade by including things like VIP events and live interaction. "We are setting out to make this more of a holistic membership experience that will feel like a community clubhouse," said Hardwick, the CEO and founder of Nerdist.

Alpha will allow members to interact with each other as well as with the content and personalities through live-video capabilities like chat, polling, and allowing viewers to appear live, on-screen during shows.

Both brands are owned by the +Legendary Entertainment, which is best known as the movie studio behind films like "Warcraft," "Jurassic World" and "Interstellar."

Alpha is set to launch in the U.S. and Canada later is this year, expected in the fall. At launch, it will be available on desktop computers online and will have an app for Apple devices, but not Android initially. The service will also be available on streaming media boxes but the company wouldn't specify which ones.

#NerdistAlpha #Geek&SundryAlpha
The geek-culture media brands are launching a paid service mashing up elements of Netflix, Twitch and the old-fashioned fan club.

Nerdist Podcast #800: +Judd Apatow Returns
Tuesday, 19th April 2016

Yay! It's the Big Eight Hundred, the 800th Nerdist Podcast! We should bake a cake! We should blow up some balloons! We should set off some fireworks at an obscene hour in the morning! Because you know damn well that Team Nerdist ain't going to celebrate this grand achievement in any meaningful fashion, right? Killjoys. Bet they're real fun at parties.

Still, at least for this grand milestone, they've roped in someone who sums up everything great and good about Nerdist: comedy, movies, creativity, being snarky and defensive on Twitter... Yup, the return of Judd Apatow is possibly the most apt guest they could have gotten. Bravo, Team Nerdist. And Happy Big Eight Hundred!

"Judd Apatow (director, 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up) returns to the Nerdist to chat with Chris, Matt and Jonah about what makes a successful movie in today's society, how comedy movies have changed since the 80's and what is was like working with the late Garry Shandling. Judd also talks about his time working on The Ben Stiller Show, why he started doing stand up again and how he is juggling stand up with directing! Go see Judd at the Balboa Theater in San Diego this Thursday April 21st!"

Nerdist Podcast #799: Sir Patrick Stewart #3
Friday, 15th April 2016

And the Nerdist Anglophilic addiction continues apace with another Brit legend, stepping up to the mic... And it's one we've heard before on the 'pod, only one of the coolest dudes ever to have walked the Earth and a bloke who hasn't seemingly aged in twenty odd years: Gurney Halleck himself, Sir Patrick Stewart.

(Yes, a Dune reference. That's how I roll.)

"Sir Patrick Stewart just can't get enough of the Nerdist Podcast! He talks to Chris and Matt about how the knighting process works, filming his second season of Blunt Talk and his first job writing for a newspaper. He then talks about auctioning off all his Star Trek scripts and the battle to get one of his Captain Jean-Luc Picard uniforms. Sir Patrick talks about his new movie Green Room, how scared he was reading the script and his work with the charities Refuge and Combat Stress."

[no nerdist.com link just yet but the thing has just gone live, bear with them, it'll be around shortly...]

Nerdist Podcast #798: Gary Oldman
Tuesday, 12th April 2016

It's late on a Tuesday night/Wednesday morning, i'm absolutely shattered, I'm tired and I want to go to bed… So, of course, and a new Nerdist Podcast shows up in my notifications, naturally. That's what we call, in the UK, 'Sod's law' - I can imagine you have a similar colourful phrase in the States which sums up that universal feeling of, "...well, of course, that's just typical!" Hey ho.

Still, there are worse people to be kept awake by than the one and only Gary Leonard Oldman, proving once again that Chris Hardwick's Anglophilic tendencies are alive and well. It's been awhile since Oldman has gone 'full Cockney' but, I imagine for our Chris, he'll give it a go.

"Gary Oldman (Batman series, The Professional, Sid and Nancy) chats with Chris about the highs and lows of being an actor, how he does not want to act in films he directs and being reunited with Kevin Costner for their new film Criminal. He also talks about the interesting experience playing Harvey Lee Oswald in JFK, how sobriety has affected his career and his friendship with the late David Bowie."

Nerdist Podcast #797: Sam Rockwell
Tuesday, 5th April 2016

Three more to go... How are you going to celebrate the Nerdist Eight Hundred?

Here's somebody who I would've sworn has been to t'Pod before - Sam Rockwell is one of the great underrated American actors and he's a great conversationalist. This should be a cracking listen...

"Sam Rockwell (Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind, Moon, Galaxy Quest) talks with Chris about growing up in San Francisco, the sequel to Galaxy Quest that almost happened and what they would say on Bill Murray’s voicemail. They also talk about method acting, they explain to the listeners how to use a Thomas Guide and how Sam prepared for his roles in Moon. Sam also talks about acting out Hamlet in public and his new movie Mr. Right!"
