NOTICE: I have moved tonight's Live Training to next week, on Monday 7/7, to 5pm PDT (yes this time just changed as of 3pm PDT on 7/7 due to my being an idiot and scheduling this over my wedding anniversary!). With all that's happened in the last three days I've been completely overwhelmed and have decided to delay it a week. Apologies for any inconvenience.
This will be the third video on adjustments, and in this one we will cover the all-important Levels.

Join this very lively discussion on the site…
The WWDC Keynote is now over. As expected, we saw no nod to Aperture, however there was a very interesting introduction of the future of Photos, and a reference to 2015. What does it all mean for us?

I found it quite ironic that that Tim Cook mocked the Android platform during his speech as he was comparing the market share of Android and iOS. He spoke of users of Android phones being stuck with 4-year old software, referring to older versions of Android. His exact words were, "... that's like ancient history." How curious! Four years, to Mr. Cook, is ancient history. I wanted to reach into my computer, point him to Aperture, and say, "You're right, Tim. Now what will you do about this piece of Ancient history?"

Recently I interviewed Olympic photographer Jeff Cable about his Photo Mechanic based editing workflow. His perception, along with nearly every other photographer at the Olympics, was that Photo Mechanic is hands-down the fastest way to import your photos. While nearly everyone accepts that it's quicker to use Aperture or Light Room to edit your selects, both have been shunned as importing too slowly. Aperture made massive improvements to import performance in 2012, and in many situations was even the speed champion. But as you'll see in the following article and videos, in this massive-import, intense deadline situation, Aperture was being left behind. Or rather, it was… until now.

A New Aperture Workflow to Blow Away Photo Mechanic

What do you get when you lock a seasoned Olympic photographer and dedicated Photo Mechanic user in a room with the ApertureExpert, a stack of fast Lexar cards and readers, a MacBook Pro retina and video camera for several hours? A new, double speed workflow. Yes. Double.

Let's Talk Cloud Backup

It’s a topic that’s come up many times, and as a follow-up to the great post last week by Walter Rowe, I wanted to bring up could backup again.

You miss one thing that IS important to many people - in Europe more than in the U.S. I think but after the NSA revelations  it should be more prominent in the U.S. too.
The point is: you have to trust the provider, the transmission protocols and the software. Many people I know refuse to use cloud backup exactly for this reason.

Live Training Complete Collection Available; Time to Start Over

The Live Training videos have been a great project, but I ran out of things to talk about long ago. So, I’m bundling them all together, and starting over.

Lift & Stamp the Retouch Adjustment to Clear Sensor Dust

If you have multiple images (a few… dozens… hundreds!) with the same sensor dust problem, you can easily batch fix them all using the Lift & Stamp command—even if you’ve rotated and cropped the photos.

I wondered why it was so quiet on ApertureExpert..... This was based upon my RSS feed in Feedly, no updates anymore since the new site.... So for RSS readers on ApertureExpert.com, please add this url to feedly to get the latest post on the new site https://www.apertureexpert.com/tips

Suggestion for +Joseph Linaschke, maybe you can push one last post on the old RSS feed "Change your RSS feed to...",
still 850 subscribers to old feed and ONLY 100 on new RSS feed in Feedly

*Live Training Session 108: Adjustments; Exposure and Enhance(

In this video, we dive into the first of many sessions on Adjustments, beginning with Exposure and Enhance.

Here are the topics we cover in this session…

Histogram (a considerable primer to the histogram, actually)
Exposure
Recovery
Black Point
Brightness
Contrast
Definition
Saturation
Vibrancy
Tint
Q&A: Do you use [Command] key with Exposure, Recovery and Black Point in your workflow?
Q&A: Can we see definition on the landscape please?
Q&A: Do you use the Exposure panel instead the Levels module? Or both?
Q&A: If "Clipping" is what one does to whites, is "Crushing" not what we do to blacks?
Adjustments include everything you do to make your photos look better, and this session kicks off the series with Exposure and Enhance.

How to Import Multiple Cards Simultaneously and Bypass Thumbnail Generation on Import in Aperture 3

Recently I met with Jeff Cable, Olympic photographer and Lexar Marketing Director, to put Aperture head-to-head with Photo Mechanic for his (and every other Olympic photographer’s) extremely time constrained workflow. The end result was nothing short of epic, cutting the import, select, edit and export time by one third. With this new super-fast import method, and Aperture’s built-in editing tools, allowing Photo Mechanic loyalists to bypassing the Camera RAW –> Photoshop –> Photo Mechanic roundtrip delay, there’s no reason any shooter on deadline shouldn’t be switching to Aperture immediately.

Photo Storage Management By +Walter Rowe

Photo storage management is a topic that comes up often. I have participated in numerous discussions on this topic here on ApertureExpert.com and on other photographer community sites. Regardless of what photo management software you use to edit, catalog and manage your photographs and videos, you need a good strategy for storing and preserving these valuable digital assets. While photo storage management is only a part of the larger subject of Digital Asset Management, it is of such importance that it deserves direct attention. In this article I share my method for photo storage management.

New AppleScript to Lift & Stamp Your Brushed Masks

We’re now selling Scott Davenport’s amazing AppleScript that allows you to copy your painstakingly created mask from one Adjustment into another. Wait, what? Yeah, that’s right… wait ‘till you get a load of this.

Joseph, I think you contribute richly to the Aperture community. And though my usage of Aperture has slipped to "occasional," I still follow the community and others that discuss the application. That said, it is very telling that in this day and age (when Capture One Pro, Lightroom and others) have this very basic capability built it, it is almost insulting that Apple has not added this to Aperture. A script? A script that restarts the application every time it's applied?

To be sure it's great that someone has undertaken a fix to this. In fact, this deficit in the application is one of the reasons I now use the application only occasionally. That such a script is required to accomplish something so basic in today's photo editing arena is a testament to how behind Aperture has fallen.
