Hermit House | Homestead, Hatchery, and Workshop
New Website is Live Now!

2016 has been a busy year for us at Hermit House. +Ted Ewen and I have been focusing all our spare time to get our new heritage chicken business up and running.

Part of that has been building this website. We wanted to provide information on what we are doing and the chickens we are raising and selling.

We still have some way to go before we are ready to sell pure breed chicks (as we have several coops we need to build). This week though we made our first bulk order for hybrid chicks.

Finishing the first phase of this website was also a big milestone for us. I'm proud to share it with you as I'm quite pleased with how it turned out :)

I hope you enjoy all the photos!

Hope this helps! I am working on the next "brain tan" video but for now this is some peoples alternative to a true tan using brains and smoke.

Update: The Chooks Have Matured! | Hermit House Homesteading

The 5 clutches of heritage hybrid chickens that we hatched last year have matured over the winter . Now the weather is improving most, if not all, of our new hens are laying as they are 16 weeks or older now.

Here is a little look out the back of our garden when we let out the masses :)

Chicken of Merit: Brownie aka Momma Chirpie | Hermit House Homesteading

Our resident Grandma Chicken Brownie unfortunately passed away today. I can think of no better way to honor her memory than to show you this video. Brownie was the mostly cuddly chicken I've even seen, as this video demonstrates. She loved being petted, having her neck and ear scratched, and generally being held. Brownie would deliberately do things that would guarantee she would be picked up.

As she was one of the survivors of the original flock from the fox attack, Brownie has been spreading her knowledge of Hermit House and the surrounding farm land to the younger generations. They learned quickly to watch and follow what Brownie does.

It's very hard not to let a wonderful critter like that into your heart, which is why it was so sad to let her go today.

I leave you then with this wonderful video we took a week ago.

So long Brownie, thank you for the journey. You will be missed.

Clutch #4 - 21/26 Hatched and Survived - 80% Hatch Rate | Hermit House Homesteading
One Casualty Though :(

We woke up this morning to find almost all the remaining eggs had hatched (19/26).

There were 3 Maran eggs that had chirping chicks inside them but had made no further progress. We had to perform surgery to remove them from their shells, as the membrane was too thick for them to penetrate. The last one had not even pipped at all and during the process we pierced the membrane and blood came out. We removed the chick from it's shell and put it in the incubator but a little while later it had died.

However we have 21 chicks so far, so can't complain too much :)

Harvest Time For the Golden Fields of Vadsby | Hermit House Homesteading

This weekend all the combine harvesters came out and began collecting the grain from the fields around Hermit House. At one point a harvester broke down but they eventually managed to get it going again.

Here are a few snaps I manged to take along the way.

Enjoy :D

A House with a View | Hermit House Homesteading

Today we decided to trim the height of the hedge in the back garden. It really opened up the view to the golden fields of Vadsby, Denmark.

We also took all the lower growth from the pine tree on the side of the driveway. This had the same effect and opened up the view through the gate and from the kitchen window.

With an additional sweep of the patio we were able to relax in our chairs and watch the birds flying over the fields. Now it feels like the neighboring farmland is an extension of our garden!

What a view! We sure are lucky to live here :D
