2016 PHOTOCHALLENGE, WEEK 17: B&W – STEADFAST.
A extremely windy day. Duluth, MN Aerial Lift Bridge. A clearance of 180 feet is attained when the span is completely raised. The span length is 386 feet and weighs approximately 900 tons! It connects the “mainland” with Minnesota (or Park) Point, a five mile long Lake Superior sandbar of houses and businesses. Operated 24 hours a day, the bridge is raised and lowered for the "big" ships carrying iron ore and cement arriving and leaving Duluth, on a Lake Superior voyage to the other Great lakes and beyond.

Domestic birds come in many shapes and forms; barnyard chickens, pet finches, ducks, parrots, peacocks and even domestic pigeons. You should be able to find one somewhere, be it caged birds at the pet store or birds at a zoo or exhibition, or maybe you have domestic birds of your own like chickens or a …

Over the course of the year, and in previous years, we’ve talked about key elements that make black and white photography distinctly different from color photography. This week we’ll focus on one of those elements: TEXTURE. Texture sounds like something rooted in the physical world, but it can also be conceptual. To use textures effectively …

If you don’t actually read this post in full, you will submit an incorrect image. What I’m asking is a number of things. This week’s portrait must be made of a NEW subject. It also requires a single source of light, the sun. And it must be backlit. So, you’ll tap into your work last …

For some people cars are simply a machine that gets you from place to place. For others, automobiles are a personal statement that reflect individual personalities – some prefer sports cars while others gravitate towards large 4×4 trucks. I’ve always tended toward a more utilitarian approach for my personal cars, choosing function over form, except for …

2016 PHOTOCHALLENGE, WEEK 18: BUDS + WEEKLY BONUS CHALLENGE

In botany, a bud is an undeveloped or embryonic shoot and normally occurs in the axil of a leaf or at the tip of a stem. Once formed, a bud may remain for some time in a dormant condition, or it may form a shoot immediately. Buds may be specialized to develop flowers or short shoots, or may have the potential for general shoot development”

WEEKLY BONUS CHALLENGE

For those interested, I invite you to remember the location of your BUD and follow it’s weekly development posting an update once a week in the comment section of the current challenge. You would be in essence cataloging your subject throughout the remainder of its life-cycle.

The rules are pretty simple:

Post one original photograph (Your Image) shot each week per theme posted on this blog to Google+, Facebook, or Flickr (or all three). Tag the photo #photochallenge.org or #photochallenge2016.

Usually we associate being steadfast with things that can have or represent some sort of moral agency, but I wanted to capture some of the more morally neutral infrastructure that dutifully holds things together day after day.
