Spring is in the air around these parts, and that means that the birds are returning and will be staking out their nesting boxes and territories very soon. My dad, who I would go out on a limb and call the King of Birdhouses, spends this time of year checking his nesting boxes and making sure everything is in good condition for his feathered friends to move in. This year, however, he got a little more than he bargained for in his owl nesting box. When he went to check the nest box, he found it to be filled with Northern Flying Squirrels. And by "filled" I mean that we were able to count 5 of the little guys piled in there. We were able to watch while they climbed out and started gliding from tree to tree all over the yard. I've seen flying squirrels in the past, they are frequent visitors to the bird feeder during the winter, but being completely nocturnal (ie: active at night) it is not common to be able to watch them gliding around in the daylight. They are just the cutest little things!
I've added a few high-resolution pictures to my website that you can see here: http://www.sarahphotography.ca/Wildlife/Mammals/
