Hector was born last spring. He had the longest tail in the neighborhood, so I was especially upset when a dog got ahold of it and stripped it clean to the bone from about the middle to the end. He took it like a trooper though, and soon it dried up, fell off and filled in with a little tuft of white hair. It really was quite becoming and made it especially easy to spot him at a distance. The girl squirrels must have liked it too because I saw him making baby squirrels earlier this year. His favorite foods were pecans and walnuts.

I could not be sorrier +Todd Url - it hurts to find them like that. And most drivers don't even bother to stop. Sounds like he had a challenging but productive life and I'm glad he had you and others as a friend. I just wish he'd been around longer.

A story of a squirrel and four nuts.....

The Greedy Squirrel Fable - How can you have four of the choicest nuts and end up with only the smallest of the four. I'm sure there is a moral - or several - to this story!

Squirrel eats flower
This one is for +Dave Besbris and I'd like to dedicate a #squirrelsunday  to him. This picture in particular, since it combines two things he likes  - squirrels and flowers. Looks like squirrels do like flowers as well ;-)
Coincidence?

What is your #squirrelsunday?

YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE CUTE.

Spring is in the air around these parts, and that means that the birds are returning and will be staking out their nesting boxes and territories very soon. My dad, who I would go out on a limb and call the King of Birdhouses, spends this time of year checking his nesting boxes and making sure everything is in good condition for his feathered friends to move in. This year, however, he got a little more than he bargained for in his owl nesting box. When he went to check the nest box, he found it to be filled with Northern Flying Squirrels. And by "filled" I mean that we were able to count 5 of the little guys piled in there. We were able to watch while they climbed out and started gliding from tree to tree all over the yard. I've seen flying squirrels in the past, they are frequent visitors to the bird feeder during the winter, but being completely nocturnal (ie: active at night) it is not common to be able to watch them gliding around in the daylight. They are just the cutest little things!
I've added a few high-resolution pictures to my website that you can see here: http://www.sarahphotography.ca/Wildlife/Mammals/
Thanks for looking! It always helps me out when you share my images with your friends
