A UK based startup that’s only been around for under a year has developed a tech that tracks facial expressions in virtual reality devices.

Emteq, based in Brighton, uses artificial intelligence (AI) and tiny sensors to read the electrical signals generated by muscle movement.

This in turn allows someone’s digital avatar, for example, to respond to the changes, without the need for face-tracking cameras.

Virtual and augmented reality were among technologies listed by Gartner's Hype Cycle as trends set to be “of the highest priority” for businesses over the next few years.

According to the analysts, virtual reality is on the ‘slope of enlightenment’, ahead of the other emerging tech it identified as being poignant for organisations.

According to Gartner, its position means that: “more instances of how the tech can benefit the enterprise start to crystallise and become more widely understood. Second and third generation products appear from technology providers. More enterprises fund pilots; conservative companies remain cautious."

We've been saying it for months now, but we’ll take any opportunity to say it again: VR is a big deal, and not just in the US. The UK and its unique tax breaks for the creative industries, alongside top tech talent and healthy investor landscape, means VR’s got a good chance to thrive here too.

Emerging technologies in particular are of interest to the UK government, who see them as a boost to the UK economy.

VRTech was curious as to what VR opportunities lie ahead for the UK, so we caught up with The Foundry's CEO Alex Mahon about what we can expect.

One of the things we love about virtual reality is its ability to bring people on any adventure in the world and have it feel realistic, despite your budget or mobility.

A recent experience from creative production agency Rewind has taken that one step further. It's partnered with Jaguar to create a 4D experience, where people can take a realistic trip in a high-speed challenge through famous street circuits that Formula E will visit in season 3: Prais, Hong Kong and New York.

The four-minute experience was launched at the Paris Motor Show last week, and incorporated HTC Vive headsets with physical fans so you can feel the wind in your face as you accelerate, a custom rumble-seat system and a force feedback wheel system. #virtualrealit

Two English companies have been commissioned to create a 'giant screen' 4D immersive film experience, using virtual reality technology, for a Chinese tourist attraction.

Talesmith and Coffee & TV have come together to set-up special projects vehicle FLYRIDE to produce a five-minute film for the new visitor's centre at Changbaishan National Park in China.

The film will include a two-minute pre-show that uses smart suspension seat technology to place the audience ‘inside’ a four storey, 4K Dome screen. It will tell the story of the natural world in a single aerial flight and will incorporate physical effects like mist, wind and scent.

A Chinese company has developed the first version of a lightweight pair of VR glasses that can be used with a PC, smartphone or their own Android device.

Dlodlo (dodo) is reportedly launching a Kickstarter campaign very soon. Its Dlodlo glasses weigh just 88g - less than a bar of soap - can be folded to fit inside a pocket and are 16mm thick.

While for many VR usually sits within the realms of science fiction, there is movement towards real-life opportunities for both consumers and businesses.

This comes as the world’s first VR operation took place at the Royal London Hospital earlier this year, and as the head of content at Oculus Rift announced that the next six to 12 months will bring some industry-changing software to VR that will shape how we all interact with it.

Here we are, at last. The long awaited mainstream virtual reality emergence is now very close.

The key elements of this emergence are, of course, stunning recent hardware devices and the efforts of the VR industry to promote these products.

But beside the ambient VR games trend, will the full emergence come from VR niche markets?

#virtualreality  #VR #AR
Mainstream emergence is on the horizon, writes real time 3D developer Nicolas Augustin, but will the full potential of VR be revealed via niche markets?.
