Amazon expands its Prime Video service to over 200 countries, but China isn’t included

Note: It's unclear to me exactly how this affects our AVD videos. I've requested clarification from AVD support services.

Quote from article: Prime isn’t available worldwide yet. In countries where there is no Prime subscription option, Prime Video will be priced at $5.99 (or €5.99 in parts of Europe) per month.

Filmmaker Spotlight
Danishka Esterhazy http://imdb.to/2gidZPE , Director of Black Field http://amzn.to/2gieiKl

Danishka started her film career by training at the Winnipeg Film Group and the Canadian Film Centre. At first, she made short films and distributed them through Withoutabox. After making several award-winning shorts, she finally raised the money to tackle her first feature-length film: Black Field.

In Danishka's words, "Making Black Field was a labor of love. It is a gothic romance inspired by the novels of the Brontë sisters and the writing of early settlers such as Susanna Moodie and Catherine Parr Traill. Black Field had a great festival run and a national release in art house cinemas, but Amazon Video Direct has allowed me to reach an even wider audience. Film lovers who might not necessarily go to a festival or to a cinematheque can now watch my film in their living room. Black Field has found a home on Amazon Prime Video and I am thrilled with how many views the film has been receiving. I knew that there was a larger audience out there and AVD has helped me find new fans all over the world."

Why Captions
To promote the best viewing experience, Amazon Video requires captions. Approximately 30% of all viewers use closed captions and 80% of those viewers aren't hearing-impaired. Learn more about caption requirements http://amzn.to/1WqJLLQ .

What is going on with submitting a video? I am now getting this error with my images:

"Cover Image(s) - Image(s)/Title Name Mismatch : We're unable to publish your title because one or more of the cover images doesn't contain or match the title name provided in the metadata. Please update the cover images, and then resubmit your title. For more information, see our Content Policy Guidelines."

My title IS on the cover image?
This i now the 3rd hurdle in me attempting to upload my movie. Good thing I didn't give a release date.

The issue was such a weird one but I got it fixed. The name of my film was "Strange Meats : The Soupie" My graphics only said "Strange Meats." It was missing the second half of the twirl. So the entire title has to be present in the art work.

Good thing this wasn't around when The Beatles put out The White Album! :)

I Have a Question  -

First time publishing a video and I ran across this error:

"Cover Image(s) - Contains URL/External Link:"

I did search before posting but nothing came up. My art director made the images to fit the specs for both key art requirements. He sent them via Google Drive.

Is Dropbox a better option?
Confused as to how an image would have a URL attached to it.

Thank You

Thanks for the heads up. My cover art has no url but that's helpful to know. All I can gather is what the media info is telling me. See this large URL from Drive. Same occurs with Dropbox.

Locally shot miniseries to debut on Amazon Prime

I've long felt the internet and social media is changing the balance of power. During the heydays of HOAs (Hangouts on Air) I called it "The Google Spring."

Here's a fascinating story of a group of locals who will soon be distributing their home grown videos internationally on the Amazon Prime Video platform. As recently as ten years ago, such reach for individuals like you and I would have been thought unattainable.

Quotable Quote: "Butera, Vasello and others have spent the past three to four years editing video and sound on the extensive footage, sometimes teaching themselves required programs and skills – all around working regular jobs. 'It’s a blessing you can fix so much in post-production, but it takes so much time,' Butera says.

Question about Background Images

Amazon art specifies an option for Background images, and describes them as ... "These appear on device detail screens. These images convey the mood of your content. Please submit .jpg or .png file format images at 1920x1080 resolution."

Sorry, his might sound symplistic, but my questions are: (1) What are "device detail pages," (2) within the context of AVD, what exactly are "background images," and (3) what do they look like?

AVD continues to annoy me! Amazon people got in touch with me in May 2016 and encouraged me to get involved in the platform. Since then I've spent a lot of time and money getting content on there. I get about 9,000 minutes viewed and $10 a month!

I'm thinking of emailing them back and saying: "Suspend my account, I really don't care!" What do you think?

"Amazon Video is constantly looking to uphold and improve catalog quality in line with customer expectations.

During a recent quality assurance review, we found that this title appears to be a duplicate of a title already submitted through your account.

As a result, these titles have been removed from sale on Amazon Video.

Please note that further violations of our Content Policy Guidelines may result in suspension of your AVD account."

I Have a Question  -

Hello . Thank you for letting us joining this group. We produce early learning story videos for little kids. We just uploaded two videos http://amzn.to/2gkO3Gk. One is 25 min and one is 42 min. so far, the 25 min had more total streaming minutes than the 42 min video, however, the average min per unique stream for the 25min video is only 8 min while the 42 min video has about 16 min per unique stream. so can someone tell me the performance of these two videos? is it bad that people don't finish the videos? and which number is more important: the total min or the average min per click? thanks!

Introduce Yourself  -

Thanks for inviting me to this great group. AVD is such a mystery in so many ways, that we are all figuring everything out and I appreciate reading everyone's experiences. We have had pretty good success lately-thanks to a documentary we produced called "The Real Haunted Mansion" http://bit.ly/RealHauntedMansion

If you didn't know IMDB (the #1 movie website in the world) is owned by Amazon. When you submit your title to IMDB a direct link to the title on Amazon is created on the main page. This has really helped us out, so y'all might want to try that to increase your numbers. Plus a IMDB link is created on your Amazon title page. Hope this info helps somebody. My name is Brett from Orlando, FL.
Thanks again for sharing information!

I don't mean to be negative but I've got zero respect for AVD at the moment. Here's a letter I wrote to one of the guys in Seattle who contacted me about AVD saying it was a good idea for me. (It's quite long. Her reply at the bottom, "I've got another job so I can't be bothered anymore")

I'm having issues with two versions of Make Money Running A Web Design Business, Season 1 (two seasons of the same name) one I tried to publish in May, one I tried to publish in September.

The one I published in May had errors for the majority of videos had "content which violates their Content Policy Guidelines". I didn't know that this was a logo/watermark issue. I had to guess that. The communications aren't clear.

The one I published in Sept was virtually the same only I'd removed the watermarks/logos but it also has two videos that have caption syncing issues even though they were captioned and edited in exactly the same way.

I'm unclear from your email which one you're advising me to change in order to get it passed?

Another standalone video has a publishing error with caption sync issues that is identical to one in the above series that did not have a publishing error.

Framerate: I have put the framerate for all the videos at 29.9fps both on AVD and at Rev and, similarly, this is passed with one video one time and is failed with the same video other times.

More frustrations have been publishing errors the movie codec or format is wrong when it's the same video format that I've used in other videos that have been published on the platform.

You "advise against creating duplicate series/seasons within an account". I was advised to do exactly that for another season that I wanted to amend and I have notified support on numerous occasions that two almost identical seasons exist on the platform side by side which is not a good customer experience.

Also, it seems that longer non-educational videos are popular on the platform (which is a Netflix competitor?) and I do short non-educational videos.

So hopefully you can understand why I'm hesitant to invest yet more time and money into putting videos onto this platform when I can't be sure about your specifications as seemingly videos and captions are passed and failed arbitrarily.

Her reply:

I wanted to let you know that I have taken on a new project in Amazon Video so will no longer be your direct contact for self-publishing. For day-to-day or technical inquiries, please continue to use the Contact Us links within the respective publishing portals.

Interneting to hear your thoughts, +Scott Scowcroft. When I compare what they told me to what's actually happened there's a gulf of a difference. I've also known people who've worked at Amazon and they really don't like the culture there. V. hard work

Amazon Video Direct: E-Commerce Giant Reveals Top-Performing Content Partners

Variety reports on AVD's top performers (those who share in the Stars $1M monthly incentive awards program). All entertainment-based, incidentally.

Quotable quote from AVD: "We’re seeing immediately that we have an audience there, and longer-form content works well ... Whereas YouTube, with its massive amount of video, is a needle in a haystack, Amazon Direct Video is much more of a curated experience. It makes it easier to get your content in front of the audience."

Hi Everyone! Just wanted to post an update on my Amazon Video Direct earnings. As you can see, my estimated amount earned is approximately $325USD for the month of September. This amount is a little more than double the amount my videos earned for the month of August, which was approximately $150USD. The last time I posted videos was in July, and I have not spent any time or resources related to AVD since July. I did link one of my AVD videos from my YouTube Channel, but that is the extent of my marketing, and I don’t even know if that helped with AVD minutes viewed.

I feel like I took a bit of a risk when uploading onto the AVD site, as I paid a considerable amount of money (considerable for me anyway) for captioning (which is required), and I was not sure that I would make that money back. The captioning expense was $600+ for my video content, and I am approaching $800 total amount earned on AVD since I started posting videos in May. So, any money earned from here on out is profit. Although uploading onto the AVD site was time consuming and expensive, I am so glad that I decided to go for it. Now that I know that I am comfortable with AVD, and that my content has the possibility to earn, I plan to start uploading more videos.

I am interested to hear any other AVD experiences, and if you feel it is a viable earning platform for the long term.
