... "The Jungle” was extraordinary, but it didn’t produce what Sinclair had hoped for—outrage over the exploitation of workers, and the first steps toward the defeat of capitalism. “I aimed at the public’s heart, and by accident I hit it in the stomach,” he later said, in perhaps his sole public witticism. Roosevelt brushed off the call for socialist revolution, and though he acted vigorously on contaminated food, his measures were neither as vigorous nor as comprehensive as Sinclair wanted. The writer, hanging around Washington, pestered the President with cables and protests, until Roosevelt, losing patience, wrote to Frank Doubleday, Sinclair’s publisher, “Tell Sinclair to go home and let me run the country for a while.” [Excerpt from "Uppie Redux" by David Denby, The New Yorker http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2006/08/28/uppie-redux ]

Just brushing up on my reading of Upton Sinclair's works. Heard a radio commentator/critic state that his works "really don't stand up well over time." Perhaps, but I have to think that a topical work such as "The Jungle"--that deals with an issue that loomed so large within its contemporary timeframe--ought to be granted a bit of slack. It was written as a serial piece in keeping with the journalistic style of the era. And the bottom line is that it will continue to make you think twice--or thrice--about whether you really want that bite of sausage.

For that person that has everything...imagine swooping your neighbor's house with this? That'll teach him for playing his music too loud!

I'm still trying to figure out where to go. Still in denial, I guess - hoping FF will come back. Where's the crowd headed?

What up? Who's splitting their time between the Facebook group and the Google Plus community?

A portion of the loan helped a member To buy more fertilizers and support labor costs during rice production.

I was upset when Google dumped Reader until I found "The Old Reader". I'm hoping that if Facebook dumps Friendfeed in the future that something similar happens.

It went down about 7:30pm PST. It took a while to figure out what happened, but someone mistook buggy search for "censorship" and decided to launch a DDOS attack.
