Remembering The Atlanta Thrashers: A History Lesson

Four years ago this month, the NHL's Atlanta Thrashers were purchased by Mark Chipman of True North Sports, later announcing that the team would move from its home since 1999 to it current home in Winnipeg, Alberta, Canada. Here is the story of the Atlanta Thrashers:

The Atlanta Thrashers joined the NHL in 1999, joining the newly created Nashville Predators, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Minnesota Wild. They were the second NHL team to make Atlanta their home. The Atlanta Flames resided in ATL from 1972-1980 making the Stanley Cup Playoffs one time before moving to Calgary, Canada in 1981, where they one 2 Stanley Cups. As you could probably guessed, the Flames (and Thrashers) were highly unpopular, since, you know, it's Atlanta. No ice.

With the first pick in the 1999 NHL Draft, the Thrashers selected Patrik Stefan from the Czech Republic (who was a total bust) and later (30th overall) selected Luke Sellers, who only played one NHL Game. In their first season, the Thrashers finished 14-57, the worst record by an NHL team in 30 years.

With the 1st pick of the 2000 NHL Draft, the Thrashers selected phenom (and future Hall-of-Famer) Dany Heatly. That year was a little bit better, but they still finished 23-45-12, getting their 3rd straight top-2 pick in the draft, selecting 19-year old Russian Ilya Kovalchuk, who became the Thrashers captian after Heatly left for the Ottawa Senators. Kovalchuk retired and returned to Russia in 2012.

The Thrashers were always known for slacking in scoring and goal-tending. With an overall record of 342-437-78, the Thrashers didn't quite live up to its name or its lofty expectations. They did make the playoffs once in 2006 losing 4-0 to the New York Rangers. Only one division title (also in '06) says a lot about their struggles. Although the "Golden Thrash" is now picking up in Winnipeg (in the playoffs currently) there will always be a special place in Atlanta for the Thrashers.

Braves Trade Everyone!

As a Braves fan, I have been furious with GM Joe Hart for the last 4-5 months. We have seen some of my favorite players in baseball, let alone the Braves. When OF Justin Upton was traded to the Padres, I was mad enough, but when the Braves traded OF Jason Heyward to the Cardnials, my least favorite team, I, along with thousands of Braves fans through out our Heyward jerseys in the trash and prayed for a miracle. We didn't get that when we traded C Evan Gattis to the Astros. I'm not going to speak much about THAT trade, but it was stupid. Sometimes the Braves make me so mad.

Which trade will help the team most?

NFL Superstar Trade Chaos!

Brandon Marshall traded to Jets for 5th round pick (as a Bears fan, this trade made me mad, MARSHALL FOR A 5TH ROUNDER? Why?)

Rams QB Sam Bradford for Eagles QB Nick Foles (Stupid.)

Leshon McCoy (PHI) traded to Bills for Kiko Alonso (BAD CALL, CHIP KELLY!)

This is why I hate the offseason.

Here's a quick poll:
