The ISS Progress 51 cargo craft launched at 6:12 a.m. EDT (4:12 p.m. Baikonur local time) from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Less than 10 minutes later, the capsule reached preliminary orbit and deployed its solar arrays and navigational antennas as planned.

At the time of launch, the International Space Station was flying about 260 miles over the south Atlantic Ocean, northeast of the Falkland Islands.
