New set of sonified slides based on a post from +John Kellden's Conversation Community [1] Click on the link below, turn up your volume (click on go fullscreen), and experience a taxonomy for the Conversation Community. Sonified slides are an experiment to bring the audience "into" a presentation, rather than looking at a representation. They are created from Google Slides and an html <audio> element. Watch the inaugural one here [2].

With the discussion on Holacracy [1] heating up in all channels, here's a 2x2 matrix to group the different positions people and organizations are taking. This came out of a conversation in the Responsive.org community. The classic position (in the LL) is a top-down approach with a ready-made solution, Zappos being a good example here. It's "machine-based", as in O/S or an All-in-One fax-copier-printer. From here you can diverge and either go up (still top-down) and introduce Holacracy as a process-based approach (adapt and exapt all core processes yourself) or adopt parts of the Holagracy machine and adjust the dials accordingly. The most promising approach, according to our conversation, was found in the UR, which I labeled "principle-based". Here you begin with the core principles in mind (self-management, going from explicit to tacit, self-organization, holonic mapping, etc.) and figure out the rest while the people and organization grow into something new. There's also a liminal space in the center, where parts, roles and processes are still fuzzy, yet to be defined.

Scouting Patagonia for new Sceenius Knowledge Expeditions. This landscape has some deeply mystical and immersive qualities. Listen to the wind sounds of Patagonia at the link below and just be there for a brief moment.

The following 2x2 matrix is a composite of recent thinking on the direction of social collaboration from +Stowe Boyd [see 1], +Philip Sheldrake (Enterprise IT and Work IT), +Harold Jarche (Network Era) and others. I sense there's an explosion of color happening in the UR quadrant, given the right work conditions & shifts in mindsets

Over at the Responsive.org we had an interesting discussion on the types of power that exist in organizations. I've build on the 5-types model from from French and Raven and expanded it a bit. There's a bottom layer that will stay constant, namely Language (as in expression of power), Legitimate Power (as in where you are), Referent Powers (as in who you are), Skills & Expertise. On the left, on a declining angle is Coercive Power, Manipulative Power and Position & Function Power (HR, MKT, IT, etc), on the climbing angle is Relational, Emotional and Inner (mind) Power. Causing this shift in power are the elements on top: increase in complexity and non-routine work and new organizational structures & designs.

Optional Zen inquiry: is this a sunset or sunrise?

About this community

A visual journey into the unexplored territories of the new connected world @ work. "The explanatory power of a metaphor comes from describing a thing we don’t understand in terms of a thing we do understand." “Thus, the task is not so much to see what no one yet has seen, but to think what nobody yet has thought about that which everybody sees.” -- Schopenhauer All of the work I am posting here is licensed under Creative Commons BY-SA unless otherwise noted.

+Harold Jarche introduces a nice adaptation of the Seek-Sense-Share learning model [1] done by HearingFirst [2]. I've recently used Seek-Sense-Share with +Nancy Dixon to explain how to "stay on top of your domain" (see visual below). You can download a PDF file here [3].

Here's a first for me to turn something virtual into something physical.. the first batch of method cards arrived! We'll be experimenting with those in the weeks and months to come. Stay tuned.

Presenting.. the first mobile app to improve the effectiveness of meetings!  The concept is based on +Dave Pollard's work on a Meeting Map [1] (part of a larger Process Map) and works as follows:

Click on the link below to open the demo app. You will see a grid of 9 buttons with "intentions" for how your meeting (can be online, a hangout, face-to-face, etc) should progress. For example, if you feel the current speaker (presenter) is too slow, hit the "speed up" button; if you want to repeat what was just said, hit the "repeat" button; if you want to ask a question, hit "ask" etc.

Now, these intentions are fed back in real time - each participant has access to the grid and sees what button was pressed immediately. Or they can press a button and everyone sees this. The idea is that anyone who is talking can take note of the collective intentions and course correct in real time. For example, if the current speaker is going too fast, someone will hit the "slow down" button, the speaker will notice it (e.g. on his mobile device) and begin to slow down, without anyone interrupting the flow. A dynamically created feedback loop created by and for the participants.

Here's the link (for the demo):
http://sceenius.com/clicker?code=demo

If you want to try it for your own meeting, change the "demo" parameter to your own name (keep in mind this app is in free alpha, changes may occur). Enjoy!

+Dave Pollard has a mind-blowing piece on how to reshape meetings (group processes) through what he calls The Meeting Map which is based on Arthur Brock's work at Emerging Leader Labs and Gameshifting [1]. Dave explains the tool on his blog, below image is my amplification & application in a Sceenius [2] context. Note the method cards on top that provide links to the process modes and styles. Also the Me and We markers to compare where "we" are (e.g. majority vote or future state) vs. "me". Would fit nicely in a graphical UI, methinks. Way to go, Dave.

+Marcia Conner , a good friend from +Change Agents Worldwide, has published The New Social Learning: Connect, Collaborate, Work (2nd Ed with Tony Bingham) - you can get it here: http://thenewsociallearning.com/

Coincidentally, I've recently updated my Social Learning Venn diagram that you can see below (previous version here: [1]). This came out of a Renga with +John Kellden who explored the edges of the diagram - Biosemiosis to the right (the Art of Conversation) and Algorithms to the left (the Machine is us).

It just occurred to me today, that the sonified slides is its own genre. It's a wireframe of a Knowledge Expedition - expressed enactively - a roped path.
