Oh by the way all, the +SatoshiPoint bitcoin ATM at CellCity.  On Piccadilly right next door to The Piccadilly Taven.  Has now been set to two way.  So you can both buy and sell bitcoin for cash notes.

A new jewellers in Altrincham has started accepting bitcoin.  It looks like they're taking it for online orders too.

Digital currencies: Call for Information submission

I've been working with +Max Flores today to finish our entry for this consultation. This is the document we sent.

We've included most of the points raised at the meetup on Monday (thanks to everyone who came as some of the input was priceless). So you guys can take credit for what we included, and we'll take the blame for what we left out. (And I'll take the blame for any mistakes as I was the typist for most of this…)

Please leave feedback, as looking back it would have been better to dedicate much more time to this. There are no doubt many things that could be improved and there is at least one contentious point in there!

About this community

Bitcoin meetup in Manchester, UK

Coinbase are currently in discussions with the United Kingdom Financial Watchdogs about the potential of setting up a Bitcoin Exchange here.

In an interview with The Times the chief executive of the exchange platform Brian Armstrong said that the talks had been ongoing for “at least six months” and stated that talks so far have been “positive and moving in the right direction.”

Although when asked about a potential launch date Mr. Armstrong said he was “hesitant to avoid putting any measure” to it.

If Coinbase are successful in their talks with the Financial Watchdog in getting the green light to open an exchange here, to stand out from the other exchanges registered in the United Kingdom like Bitstamp and Coinfloor they will have to develop a working relationship with the banking industry which no exchange has been able to achieve for any more than a few months as of yet.

A faster payment service which goes from account to account and takes around a maximum of two hours to complete are an essential part of being able to make a difference to the UK exchange arena.

We have had this with the likes of Netagio and Coinfloor before but it didn’t last any more than a few months before the banking institutions involved withdrew their support.
While the United Kingdom seems to be leading the way globally in regards to digital currency regulation, we have yet to get a major exchange based here where you don’t have to use SEPA to transfer money to purchase your Bitcoin and trade. Coinbase looks to be on track to change all this.

Sadly as we’ve been unable to find a speaker in time, we’re going to cancel our March meetup. (The “regular” 1st Monday slot would have been March 2nd.)

However, we’ll announce April’s meetup next week. It will be worth the wait – stay tuned! :-)

We've now resolved the DNS issue. Apologies to anyone who tried emailing us. Protip: don't change domain owner without proof of address first!

Please note – due to an administrative problem the domain bitcoinmanchester.org.uk is down, currently trying to resolve this Nominet but it may take a few days. Email is unfortunately offline too but you can still reach us here.

Thanks +Adam R. The problem isn't with the hosting, the problem is that I changed to Gandi account that owns the domain at the same time I changed address, so I had no proof of address to send them (even though the domain hasn't really changed owner!). I asked Smile / Co-op Bank to send me a statement but it has taken them so long (as always, sight) that the Nominet deadline passed first. I am not happy to say the very least!!! I hope it will get resolved soon.

Glad to hear you're getting something ready, we'll organise something for a future meetup!

Cheers
Ash

Call for speakers! We have a talk booked for April, but not March. It could be long, short or in between. I posted more details to the mailing list, if you have any ideas, please get in touch. Short version (blatant bribery): your short talk means everyone gets to eat pizza and go to the pub :-)

Even with prices falling traded volume is increasing.
Trading volume has surged at the sub-$200 bitcoin price, making it the busiest day for exchanges since last November.

Seems I forgot to paste in the full description of tonight's event, as Google+ makes it hard to see the link to the full event page: http://www.bitcoinmanchester.org.uk/meetings/bitcoinmanchester-12/

Here's what's happening:

October’s speaker will be Jason Kelly of Isle of Man based Qwikbit Solutions Limited. Qwikbit installs and operates Bitcoin AVMs (“kind of like an ATM, only for Bitcoins”) in the UK and their stated mission is to ensure that Bitcoin is as widely available and easy to purchase as possible. Qwikbit owns a number of Lamassu Bitcoin automated vending machines and they intend to launch a number of their AVMs in Manchester in the near future.

Jason will speak about the history of Qwikbit, the operation of their Lamassu AVMs (We are hoping that Jason will have one of his Lamassu AVM’s with him in October to demonstrate to the group!) and will also bring insight into the development of the positive environment for Bitcoin businesses on the Isle of Man, recently styled in Daily Telegraph as “Bitcoin Island”. He’s also happy to answer questions and talk about any other topics the audience would like to hear about.

We're giving you all a second chance to explore bitcoins tonight at 6pm as part of #Politika: Art & the Affairs of the City.

Head down to the Engine Room to join Bitcoin Manchester who are back by popular demand to talk about the crypto currency.
