A new post from the D&D Adventurers League: January adventures on the DMsGuild

It’s the first Tuesday of the month and that means new adventures! We offer you the first Tier 3 adventure in Beregost for the season and continuations of adventures in Parnast and Stagwick. DDAL05-08 Beneath Durlag’s Tower East of Beregost, nestled in the outskirts of the Wood of Sharp Teeth, Durlag’s Tower has intrigued and yet stymied adventurers for decades. Stuffed full of mechanical traps and arcane wards, and rumored to be inhabited by fiends, very few have managed to extract any REAL treasure from the former home of Durlag Trollkiller. However, a powerful item in the ancient fight against the giants is said to be housed there, and the cloud giant Baron Rajiram has committed significant resources to recovering it. After a very pleasant tea in her garden, SEER calls upon you to beat him there and put a stop to his efforts! Designer: Alan Patrick Characters of Level 11-16 Playtime: 4 hours   DDAL05-09 Beneath Durlag’s Tomb A continuation of DDAL05-08. HSING comes forth to communicate that she wants you to see if you can find some way to either insure Gralm remains neutral, or to encourage the creature to challenge Bad Fruul to single combat in the hopes that he might wrest control of the hill giant’s forces and turn them back from Parnast. However, with the shattering of the Ordning, rune magic has once again emerged into the Realms. Adventurers must delve into a ruined complex beneath the Spine of the World, suspected by SEER to be the birthplace of that arcane tradition. Hello,

When boosting a character from 4th level to 5th level. What is the cost in gold and downtime?

How do you handle pick pockets in AL?

I'm running DDEX 2-6 in a PBP game, and the party rogue wants to pick the pockets of the nobles in the opening scene.

Can it even happen? Would his spoils be a part of group loot? If he gets caught, is he out of the adventure (brand new 1st levek character, and none of the other PCs know him).

How would you rule this?

One of the things I have like most about AL is that ANY loot obtained is automatically split evenly between all party members. And that by and large only listed treasure for an adventure is eligible for looting. So now people LIKE rogues when they succeed on stealing stuff. (And still DISLIKE them when they get caught and potentially throw the whole party into hot water.)

Does inspiration travel across modules? Not all of my player's used their inspiration. Would they keep it for the next time they play?

Or should I recommend that they use it up while they have it?

Thanks!

Oh yeah. That was my call as well. I just thought it was amusing that he tried to use it after the game was over. :)

Looking for players for an online game. I'm running the Storm King's Thunder adventure using Roll20 and Google Hangouts.

This is my game plan. Each session will last at least 4-5 hours with a hour break, the first Saturday each month. The game is based on the current season’s story of Adventurers League.

The first session will be on October 1st around noon CST. We’ll focus primarily on character creation. I'll also be explaining game mechanics and answering any questions to anyone new to D&D or AL. We'll be using Google Hangouts, and working out any kinks during that time as well.

I still have openings if anyone is interested.

The second option is live-streaming. “If you live-stream your online game using any free-to-watch streaming service, such as Google Hangouts On Air or Twitch.tv, you can get the D&D Expeditions adventures to showcase in your game. You can do this in one of two ways: 1) Contact a store to be your sponsor, it can get you certs and the adventures. 2) Contact WIzards Customer Support and tell them you want to stream D&D Expeditions. My understanding is that the Epic will be run 3 times - once on each day. Both Tier 1 and Tier 2 versions (3 hours) will be run at the same time in each slot.

Looking for a slot in an online Roll20 5e Adventurers League campaign, I have a DCI number and all that good stuff, I am easy to get along with and I'm desperate to play in an AL campaign.

Just let me know if anyone has any slots or wants to ask me any questions.

First time AL DM here, and I have some questions.

I bought some modules randomly to see what they're about and what the guidelines are for running them and came across some oddities.

In DDEX2-11 Obliette of Fort Iron (level 1-4), it says that PCs may know a certain NPC if their character has played through one or more of three other modules (Page 6). However, two of those modules listed (2-6 and 2-9) are both for Levels 5-10. How would a PC have run through a higher level adventure before they run through a lower level adventure.

I looked up both of those modules, and they both say (on the same page; Page 2 for both) that if a PC falls outside of the level range, they are ineligible to play this module AND if a player has an ineligible PC, they can make a new Level 1 PC to play the module (which is outside the level range). Can level 1 PCs play in the level 5-10 modules? The modules say you both can and cannot.

What are the guidelines for this?

OK, that answers Jarred's general question, but not his specific question.

Jarred, yes, modules are Tier 1 (1-4), Tier 2 (5-10) and Tier 3 (11-16). Characters must be of a level that matches those tiers when they begin a module and can't play it if they are outside it.

The Adventurers League modules form a continuing narrative, strongly linked within a given season and loosely linked between seasons. Characters, settings and events from earlier seasons reappear or are referenced in later seasons, and similarly there are continuing characters and event within the stories of a given season.

Since the modules come out in sequential order, some players will have played characters in earlier modules, and when those players play later modules they will be familiar with the earlier events, even if those specific characters from the previous adventure were "out-of-tier" for the new one. Perhaps the new characters were acquainted with the former ones, or heard a rumour, or listened to a bard tell the tale, etc. It's most likely the PLAYERS who will remember (or not), but it can be fun for them to explain how their new characters might have some knowledge of the former.

Also note that direct links to download documents aren't always the best to reference because they don't change when the version number of the document itself changes. The download page given above, or just

http://dndadventurersleague.org/storm-kings-thunder-pg-and-dmg

is probably the safest bet.

So, this may be a stupid question, but I'm curious to find out what the answer is-

I read through the DDAL players guide last night and I am trying to figure out what the actual purpose is to DDAL? What does it do for someone who plays "official" DDAL content vs. just playing?

I had also previously asked about a DCI number and I was told that you only need it for (I believe) convention play? I have a feeling I'm wrong on that one, but in either case, again, what's the purpose?

This isn't me talking crap, it is pure ignorance. I really want to be involved but I don't know what the point is. Thanks everyone!

DDAL legal games can be played in stores, at conventions, at public game days, online, in schools, at home, in prisons, in libraries, etcetera.

DDAL uses a specified ruleset to let you take your DDAL characters played at one location with one DM and be accepted by other DMs at other locations as a result.

Hey all, been considering trying out a DDAL game on Fantasy Grounds. I put a post over on their forums and got redirected to www.alonlinetools.net and that site looks like it's just signups. So, I turn to this community to see of there is someone that can get me in a game and give it a shot, learn me the ropes of the Adventurers League stuff and see if it's something I like. Thanks all!

alonlinetools is a good place to go for online play. if u are looking for live games id suggest checking the meetup app and reddit has r/lfg and r/dndnext. also u can go to the WotC website and search for local game stores that play adventure league.

So I am trying to use alonlinetools.net but I can't figure out how to sign up for an email notification of new game posts. I don't have a ton of time but when I do I can usually plan ahead enough to join a game...except that by the time I think to look to see if there is a table it is already full and has a long wait list. I am sure I am missing something...?

There will soon be a "public" (no login required) front page listing upcoming games. So I guess it would be possible to use a 3rd party tool to grab that page and e-mail it to yourself if you'd like to get regular notifications of updates. Some tools only send an e-mail if there's been a change, so if you find a good one, please let everyone know.
