.       Caribbean name – The interesting story behind the name
It is a popular story as to how Columbus stumbled across a bunch of islands in this region and thought he had reached another part of the world. As such, he named those islands as ‘West Indies’. However, later it was realized that what he had found was a whole new region with its amazing natural resources intact. As such, the name ‘Caribbean’ was later given to it by the Amerindian tribe, the Caribs, hence the name- Caribbean Sea.

The name "Caribbean" is derived from the Caribs, one of the dominant Native American groups in the region at the time of European contact during the late 15th century. After the discovery of the West Indies by Christopher Columbus in 1492, the Spanish term Antillas was assigned to the lands; stemming from this, "Sea of the Antilles" is a common alternative name for the Caribbean Sea in various European languages.
