Good morning Group - I wanted to share a little positive information this morning.  The magazine "Inc" (June 2015, page 35) has a great article "Making It Work" about providing jobs in new start ups for people with Autism.  One good quote, "When you've met one person with autism, you've met one person with autism."  You should pick up a copy and let the editors know you're doing this because of the magazines support for employing people with disabilities.

UPDATE!!

I joined the The Arc of Texas Action Center on February 20, 2013 and told my story.

On  February 22, 2013,  I received and e-mail from Governor Rick Perry's office indicating my views have been shared with their Budget, Planning, and Policy division staff, and, asking, Jon Weizenbaum, Commissioner of the Texas Department of Disability & Aging Services to have his staff review and respond to myself and his office as to the information shared.

On March 2, 2013, I received a phone call from Program Specialist with DADS Local Authorities section.  She reviewed my letter and talked with me about my issues, problems, and struggles I have been facing.  She IMMEDIATELY took action, and within 15 minutes of our phone call, The Andrews Center Director contacted me and arrangements were made to provide me and my son transportation to the Athens office to complete necessary paperwork and discuss programs, services, and goals for my son.

On, March 13, 2013, I was FINALLY contacted by his Service Coordinator and discussed his options, programs, transportation, etc, and are currently working on a Plan/Program that should be implemented within the next 30 days.  Delays at this point, are NOT due to The Andrews Center.

I must have the Court appoint me as his Legal Guardian, since his is over 18, to proceed any further.

This is a VERY EXPENSIVE process, and due to income,  I have been in contact with Lone Star Legal Aid to assist me, BUT, I had to get rid of some  my personal assets to qualify for their assistance.

As of this date, I have done what they asked and have another appointment set for 4/30/2013 to see if they can help me.

Hi there! My name is Lauren Hitchin and I am a doctoral student at The University of Auckland Faculty of Education. I am researching the relationship that persons with intellectual disabilities have with their communities. The aim of my research is to ultimately increase the inclusion of persons with intellectual disabilities in New Zealand communities. This will be done, in part, by creating an intervention that encourages the interaction of persons with intellectual disabilities and persons without intellectual disabilities, in a fun, comfortable environment. I anticipate that the negative attitudes towards persons with intellectual disabilities held by some citizens, and the fear of the unknown that many citizens have, will be dispelled once they spend time with persons with intellectual disabilities. I came into this field of research as my brother is intellectually disabled, and I am passionate to bring about change in this area in New Zealand. I am really loving my studies thus far. If you have any suggestions/comments in my area of research, feel free to comment in my blog :)
