Faq for the Climate Change Community, updated September 9, 2017

THIS IS NOT A GENERAL NATURE COMMUNITY. THIS IS NOT A GEOLOGY COMMUNITY. THIS IS NOT A PHOTOGRAPHY COMMUNITY. THIS IS NOT A PLACE YOU CAN SELL ANYTHING. THIS IS A COMMUNITY FOR NEWS AND INFORMATION ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE AND RELATED ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES.

The Climate Change community is a place to share information and discuss issues about climate change and its impact on people, politics and the world. All postings must directly focus on the various aspects of climate and/or related environmental issues. There are other places on G+ you can debate or talk about other issues, but not here.

It's true that we're rather fact oriented here; it's not a debate place for the existence or non-existence of climate change or humanity's role in it. Denialism in posts or in comments will get the poster blocked.

This is not a general green/liberal community. If your green sensibilities matter more than the science and fact behind climate issues and sustainability, this might not be the right place for you. We don't do animal rights for the sake of animals, for example. Discussions about veganism must be tied into climate. Read the note about GMO issues below. We do talk about extinction and endangered species as they are an environmental issue. The community is officially neutral about nuclear power, although we are highly aware of dangers involved with nuclear.

And we don't allow trollish behavior, like talking down to each other.

To facilitate this, we have some rules. The most important:

1. ALL POSTS MUST BE ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE AND/OR RELATED ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

2. NO MARKETING AT ALL

3. NO CLIMATE DENIALISM AT ALL

Because of the increase in spam posts, I now approve who may join the community.

WHERE TO POST STUFF

1) Do not post the same article into multiple categories.

2) The Climate Change News Stories category is reserved for Climate Change news, preferrably from news sources, not your own blog.

3) Other environmental news (like issues with fracking or pollution) is welcome under the Other Environmental News and General Discussion category.

4) Please put video articles in the video category and graphics and photos in the graphics category.

5) Blog articles you write are welcome. Please post to the appropriate category. There are a number of subject specific categories, but putting them in the Blog category is always all right.) Please do not keep posting the same blog post multiple times. If your blog is mainly to drive people to buy the products you're selling, your posts may be removed.

6) If you have an original piece of fiction or poetry that is environmental/climate change oriented, you may post it under the Memes/Graphics/ Creative category.

7) If you use a URL shortener, please be sure you have the name of the site the link is from or a copy of the full url mentioned, so people know where they will end up when they click on the link. It is uncool to expect people to click on blind links.

8) Anti-GMO posts must be focused on climate or environmental problems.

GMO in and of itself is a science technique for hybridizing. Until there is good peer-reviewed and non-controversial (within the science community -popular views on this aren't the deciding factor) evidence to the contrary, discussions that are anti-GMO in this community need to be focused on the environmental impact of the various GMO crops, like the problems with drowning the environment with roundup and other herbicides, and the resulting superweeds, or the business models that impact the environment, like Monsanto's lobbying for things that favor it, or the problems with the lack of genetic diversity and such stuff. We have to treat GMO with the same level of scrutiny as climate science, at least here.

9) This is not a vegan community. If your vegan article is about more than the climate advantages to veganism, (such as environmental impact of factory farming, or the reduced footprint of methane production, etc.) it will be removed.

This is not an animal rights community; the impact of ecological destruction on animals is acceptable, but issues about the morality of meat eating because they take animal lives is outside of the scope.

10) This is NOT A GENERAL PROGRESSIVE COMMUNITY

This is a Climate Change/related environmental issues community.

People who make a habit of posting political articles that don't have direct connection to climate and environmental issues in the content of the shared article will be removed. This has always been one of the rules - all things posted must have a connection to climate and environmental issues.

The fact that a person in a government is seen as threatening to environmental issues does not make stories about them acceptable unless it HAS DIRECT ENVIRONMENTAL OR CLIMATE NEWS OR ANALYSIS IN IT.

There are plenty of other places to share that news. Please do. But this community has a narrow focus.

(I am maxed out on categories, so there won't be any new categories added unless G+ allows more)

WHAT NOT TO POST:

1)Climate change denial posts or comments. This is an automatic ban. Avoid active links to denier sites without good reason. Rule of thumb is if a casual reader could be confused about us advocating a site like WUWT, don't do it before the cut.

2) Anti-science posts. This includes posts that "know better" than accepted science, although does not include cutting edge research that isn't fully accepted, but is being actively researched.

3) Posts marketing green products or services. Occasionally, I will allow crowd-funded drives on Activism, but for the most point, this community is not here to drive sales. Coming here to post your green product line can result in being banned

4) Posting posts that have nothing to do with climate change or related environmental issues.
Pretty nature pictures don't qualify as an environmental post.

5) Do not post conspiracy theory, pseudoscientific, or religious /spiritual articles, including links to sites with prophecy messages, either as stand alone posts or in the comment boxes. We keep a high standard of scientific accuracy here for the most part, and I moderate everything. (I recommend a read of : http://lifehacker.com/5919830/how-to-determine-if-a-controversial-statement-is-scientifically-true if you have trouble deciding if it's good science or not)

6) Posting a religiously preferential (this guy's faith is wrong, or my faith is right and I'll pray for you) type post or comment in this community is not appropriate. The only reason to talk about people of faith in this community is how they are dealing with climate change/environmental issues. A story about a pastor or religious leader who takes a stand on it is appropriate. A comment about how their denomination is wrong on faith issues, not climate/environmental issues is inappropriate. Please save such comments for more appropriate communities or the main stream.

Do not post from sources like The Great Wave of Change.Instant ban.

7) Bad science, self-aggrandization, especially of the "I know better than the scientists" type, pseudo-science, and coming in to hit us with a string of blog articles in a row, and likewise posting them on every community that might likely accept them (I've seen people do this to six or more communities with a single post) with no evidence that you read the community or pay attention to the rules might get you removed as a spammer.

WXShift on Climate Change

Rising greenhouse gas concentrations have caused changes in the global climate: hotter temperatures, more heavy downpours and shifting drought patterns. But climate change isn’t uniform. Some places are seeing more dramatic changes than others. See what’s happening across the U.S. from the local to the national scale.

Are old white men to blame for climate change denial? The Guardian thinks so

Well, I'm white, old. I grew up learning that the seas were so big and self cleansing they could never become contaminated. I studied and I came to doubt that learning.

Now it has been proven and we are in a hurry with saving ourselves and the planet!
