Kattankudy, Batticaloa

Kattankudy is one of 14 Divisional Secretary divisions of Batticaloa District. This city is located around 5 Km south of Batticaloa town towards Kalmunai. The population of Kattankudy is around 49,000, they live in 18 villages within a 3.89 Sq. Km area. Neatly planted date palm trees along the center of the main road indicates you have entered the city of Kattankudy. The city is probably the nicest place in Batticaloa to have a mixture of a Sri Lankan and Arabic meal.

Deepavali Festival

The anniversary celebration commemorates the killing of Ravan, ”King of Lanka” (who kidnapped Seetha) by Lord Rama. The epic “Ramayan” refers to how Rama, the eight manifestation of god Vishnu, killed Ravana in Satyug. Deepavali, the festival of lights, is celebrated to mark the victory of light over darkness or good over evil. It falls on the 14th day of the dark fortnight in Aipasi October – November. The day is begun by a ritual bath at sunrise, which is akin tohaving a bath in the sacred river Ganga. Houses are decorated with hundreds of small oil lamps during the late evening hours.
