The Eye Tribe Tracker for Windows & OSX v0.9.77 released

by Martin » 04 May 2016, 00:18

It's been a while but finally here it is, the new .77 release. There's many changes under the hood so let us know if there's anything troubling. This round covers primarily bug-fixing, improved run-time efficiency and better tracking in some situations.

Download available at your account page.

EyeTribe Server
- Optimized tracking algorithms for faster recovery
- Improved image processing routines for faster and more precise detection of eye features
- Reduced CPU consumption, fewer spikes
- Pull request has been deprecated, Push is mandatory and selected automatically for new connections
- Heartbeats have been deprecated (still supported). Client connections will not be disconnected if heartbeats are not sent to the server
- API ID has been added (optional). The ID is simply echoed in the reply if it’s available with the request. The ID has been introduced for synchronization purposes.

EyeTribe UI for Windows
- Showing Frames Per Second in title bar of APIConsole (avg over 1000ms)
- Fixed memory leak in APIConsole
- Fixed bug for calibration point sampling duration (TETControls) did not respect setting applied in application.
- Fixed additional minor bugs in TETControls and C# TETClient. Source code will be pushed to Github repo shortly.

>Eye Tribe has been working on trying to place this tech inside smartphones (and even smartwatches) for several years, but believes it may have more success with VR headsets.
The sensitivity of the technology decreases the further away it is from the eyes, but placing the sensor in the foam of the VR headset helps eliminate error.

Virtual reality experiences could be all about the way you gaze. Several demos at Mobile World Congress made the magic happen.

MIT Technology Review – “After a tutorial with a headset retrofitted with Eyefluence’s technology, I had no trouble selecting apps from the home screen, playing Whac-A-Mole with my eyes, and panning around a virtual space with 40 different displays that I could zoom in and out of. It felt natural"
If virtual reality is going to be truly immersive, holding a game controller could be distracting. Companies will instead try to let you control the action with your eyes, head, or fingers.

Eye Tribe Tracker PRO - "accounts for head movements along the Z-axis (depth) from the device - larger screens (up to 27"), higher frame-rate (+75), pupil size in millimeters, and more robust USB connectivity"

Hi DP, The first development-kit device does not account for head movements along the Z-axis (depth) from the device. We know that's been a big limitation so we've worked hard on it over the last two years. New device resolves this issue. Other improvements for the new device is larger screens ...

About this community

The idea for creating this community is to gather people who wish to be a part and/or contribute in developing an android app which uses a tablet's front camera to capture where the user's eyes are looking allowing him to move around a cursor with only his sight. The reason behind this idea is my father. He was diagnosed with ALS and could only move is eyes, so he couldn't communicate with us anymore and this could have provided him with a way to communicate again.

Hi everyone!

I'm working on the Android version of Roger, a voice communication app that works by exchanging small voice messages with your closed ones. It is similar to a Walkie-Talkie in a way, we built on that concept and we're giving it a modern twist while focusing deeply in trying to make it feel as simple and close to normal human conversations as possible.

That said, I'm beginning to work on accessibility and would like to get in touch with users with impaired vision to help me understand how you would usually use apps, and what I can do to improve the application.

Answer me directly trough G+, or send me an e-mail to pedro@rogertalk.com

If anyone installs the app and wants to send me some quick feedback you can add trough me: https://rogertalk.com/pedro
Roger is the best way to talk with with friends and family. It’s a free walkie-talkie style app that connects you to anyone in your phone. Try it now!

>An MIT researcher decided she wanted to take a whack at it, so to speak.
“It’s one thing to play the arcade game Whac-A-Mole by swinging around an oversized mallet; it’s far easier to whack those moles virtually, controlling the mallet with just your gaze.”
This is what Rachel Metz, senior editor for MIT’s Technology Review publication, said of her trip to Eyefluence’s offices in Milpitas, California, where she got to play with a gizmo that might just be the future of virtual reality, or at least a big part of it.

>The Eye Tribe Tracker Pro offers consumer product eye tracking for $199

Created by four former PhD students from the IT University of Copenhagen, the system was initially aimed at developers and sold about 10,000 units.
Now the team is back with a consumer product, the $199 Eye Tribe Tracker Pro, a version of the system that can be used by nearly anyone.
Considering most eye trackers are about $20,000, this is a big deal.
