Shorter episode this week, and just me contributing. But as a proof of concept of as a means of recording episodes, I'd call it a success.

So here's the topic for Spam Spam Spam Humbug 86, which is again being recorded this week using

If you'd like to chime in, you'll need the app for iOS or Android, and you'll need to DM me for the username and password for the SSSH account.

Here's a segment I just recorded:

Hopefully more people join in this week. I used to record SSSH 85 as well, though ultimately it was only me that contributed content. Still, it worked rather well, so...hey, why not give it a shot?

To the surprise of (I hope) nobody, we veered wildly off topic.

I've just realized something that (I think) is quite unique, and has only happened in Ultima VI as far as I know: Language diversity.

In Ultima VI, before having the language script, the player would read unknown symbols. Once obtained and used, the Avatar would understand to gargoyles and read gargish texts.

Do any of you remember any other game in which such need is present? As far as I know, perhaps Neverwinter Nights 2 could be some sort of sample.

Wouldn't it be great to play a whole world in which you can talk to certain group of people at towns, but once you do some sidequest missions, or obtain the abilities/skills, you're able to read normally (automatically translated by the game) either ancient runes or language, or talk to other races?

This would become a game way more realistic, but of course, game developers would starve thinking of "new" languages. Perhaps using the real world diversity may also work, like some people talking in Spanish, other in Italian, other in whatever language is spoken in Madagascar, etc. (If the play knows the language, good for them, less time having the player to unlock the Auto Translator).

What do you think of the ideas of having RPG games with language diversity as a challenge?

I got thinking about The Guardian... and wondering if any Dragons knew any interesting alternative origin stories for Him? I have no time for Ultima IX's EvilsideoftheAvatar nonsense (I doubt I'm alone!).

I remember back in usenet days a lot of pre-U9 speculation ranging from Chuckles to the Time Lord... Anyone have any good ideas or convincing explanations? Amusing suggestions? Any links to a detailed blog explaining (in quotes from U2 onwards) how the whole series has been leading towards Mariah as Big Red?

I'd go for Exodus personally, but I think that's just because they're both awesome villains... Although RG did hint that he was from a family of beings of similar power...

Hi Everyone. I'm Michael "Chgowiz/ChicagoWiz" -- been a long, long time Ultima fan since the C64 and the first three games. Which are still my favorites to this day.

My contribution to Ultima fandom was to take a free, fan written version of old D&D and rewrite it for simulating the lands of Sosaria as they existed in Ultimas 1-3. If you're interested, curious, here's the link:

Look forward to getting to know you all!
