The Good Turned Evil
By Aelita Lestrange (Aka: Arya Veil)
This story is based of real events in Shepherdstown, Virginia.
During colonial times there was a town in Virginia near the Potomac river. The town was average except for the fact that many of the children were falling ill. The parents and families tried all they could but to no avail. Struck with grief they looked for someone to blame, they looked for a witch. There was one woman in the town who was slightly odd, she liked to hang around a well and take walks it the woods. Because of this the town's folk were quick to blame her. One day while she was wondering the woods she got surrounded by the town. They shouted at her, accusing her of poisoning the well and killing the town's children. She denied everything and begged the people to see she was innocent. Yet they were blinded by their grief and wouldn't listen to her. Dragging the poor girl by her hair, the people went down to the river shouting witch. There they put a heavy cloth over her face, tied her to a cross and drowned her in the river.
After the girl was long dead they let her body float down the river, then went back to their lives thinking the killed the evil. What the didn't notice though was the faint crying coming from the forest.
A child. In a basket lay a little girl, tucked lovingly in blankets. For a while she was fine but soon she became cold, Hungry, and lonely. She screamed and cried for her mother but the mother never came. The baby soon died, whether it was from the cold or starvation we don't know.
The reason the mother never came for her precious baby was because she was drug away by her people and drowned in the Potomac, accused of being a witch. As she drowned all she wanted was to get back to her baby, knowing the people would never go for the child, in fear that it was tainted with witchcraft. As she took her last breath, her body went down the river but her spirit stayed. Believing she could find her baby and have peace she ran through the woods searching desperately for the child. But all was in vain. She could hear her babies cries but no matter how hard she look her precious daughter was nowhere. As time went by she became tortured by the girl's cries and sadness turned into anger. The town's people killed her for the deaths of their children and yet the caused another child to die. Her spirit swelled with power and grew dark and cold, thirsty for vengeance. She vowed to make the town pay for what the did to her and her baby.
Centuries passed and technology had come far from that horrible day. They stopped Believing in witchcraft, stopped blaming it for bad things that happened. They came to realize that natural diseases often caused death. Diseases and misplaced anger.
The town itself survived throughout the years but yet it was never the same. No matter how people tried to brush it off there was always a presence in the town. It wasn't too much to cause concern, that is until a certain couple moved into a house. A house that was built over a certain well. For a while they would have some odd things happen in the house but something happened that made everything explode.
The girl became pregnant.
Suddenly the town went ballistic! Paranormal activity was everywhere and the town grew scared. They didn't know what to do so the called in famous investigators to hopefully bring a stop to the terror. They team worked tirelessly to help the town and with every place they went two the found something in common with all the hauntings. Water and children.
After days upon days they finally came to the house over the well where the pregnant girl was being terrorized. With the help of another woman, a woman who could see the dead they came to realize what plaqued the town. A curse. A curse set by and innocent woman with a powerful spirit who only wanted to be with her child. She created a cold energy around the town, causing the other unjust dead to rise and wreak havoc. And she became even stronger when the girl was with child, reminding the spirit of the wrong done to her.
The team worked desperately to put the woman to rest, but in order to do that they had to preform a ritual. Right at the shore on the Potomac where she was murdered. Each one took a charm and said words of sympathy, hope, and apologized to the spirit for what the town had done. They apologized and released the woman.
Lifting the curse.
Nine days after the ritual all activity has disappeared. The town was filled with relief and soon everything became normal.
Yet no one will ever forget what had happened to the town or why it happened.
And everyone prays that the woman's spirit is at rest and peace.
And that she'll never return.
