Alpha Loom Patterns of the Week - National Doughnut Day, June 3
Created in 1938 by The Salvation Army, National Donut Day is celebrated every year on the first Friday in the month of June. The day was created to celebrate and honor the individuals who served donuts to the World War I soldiers. Since then, the day has also come to be a time to celebrate the traditional dougnut, which is a circle shapred piece of dough that is cooked via frying before it is decorated with sweet... topping such as sugar, icing or sprinkles.
The special dougnut holiday was founded on June 7th in 1938. Lieutenant General Samuel Geary had received a dougnut by a military doctor while he was injured Lieutenant Geary was very appreciated of this simple gesture and decided to fundraise alongside with Morgan Pett in order to provide every injured soldier with a donut. Soon after, The Salvation Army agreed to join this dougnut mission. As part of the partnership, doughnuts were served in the "Salvation Army Huts" stationed throughout France. These huts also provided other baked goods, coffee, writing supplies and stamps, and clothes-mending services. Many enlisted soldiers visited these huts to obtain coffee and donuts as the Salvation Army volunteers who staffed the huts became known as "Doughnut Dollies." To this day, cities such as Chicago use National Donut Day to raise funds for The Salvation Army as well as honor the Doughnut Dollies.
Within the United States, it is common for many local and chain donut shops to offer free donuts or special edition donuts to celebrate Donut Day.
