American Redstart on Baldpate Mountain, New Jersey USA 5/18/2017.

Being a relative noob at birding, I first became aware of this bird last year after seeing it on a few birders' lists. When I researched it online, it was obvious I had never seen it, despite it being listed as "common" in my part of the world.

I have been looking for one ever since. While it was on my mind last year, I decided to step things up this year and actively search for them. After a few misses and sightings too far away to photograph, I found them thanks to a tip from a another birder about a breeding location.

Conditions were not favorable with the bright light, heavy bush, and 90+ degree temps, but I was able to stay in the range for over an hour. Despite this, I only got a few photos worth keeping, and none I would consider really "great". Still, I feel I can mark this bird off my "need to get a photograph" list and put it in my "want a better photo" notebook ;-)
