Movie Review: Matt Shepard is a Friend of Mine (2013)

I was scrolling through my Netflix account when a movie caught my eye. Matt Shepard is a friend of mine. Living in Wyoming and being gay, the title struck my eye instantly. Matt Shepard. The gay college student who was born in Casper, a town not far from mine, who was beaten to death in Laramie, another town only a day's drive away. He had attended the school that I had visited on multiple occasions. He had faced the same homophobia that I faced. He had probably been in a few of the same places that I had been. The story could not hit any closer to home. But then it did.

This documentary focuses not solely on the murder, but it's before and after. It gives the friends and families of Matt Shepard a chance to really talk about who he was and what he was like, and to grieve. And through their experience, Matthew Shepard becomes Matt. He stops being a LGBT+ figure and starts being a human. A real person. Someone I might have been good friends with, or even had dated, had we been the same age. In a lot of ways, Matthew Shepard was a lot like me. He was a young man growing up a in an infinitely small yet infinitely large place. Wyoming, if you don't know, has about 500,000 people and about 100,000 square miles. That's about 6.0 people per square miles. If everyone spread out equally, there would be 6 people in a square mile. The entire state feels lonely. It's so hard to meet LGBT people, or even people with less conservative views. And although homophobia isn't as much of a problem anymore, it's still there, and it's a lot harder to cope with when there's no one to help you cope with it. Matt also enjoyed theatre. He wanted to be an actor, and he wanted to explore the world, meet new people, and most importantly, leave Wyoming. These are all things I can relate with. I feel as though I am so similar to Matt that I could almost be him, if I believed in reincarnation. But that's the most brilliant thing about this short. They turn Matt into a real person, so real you could have been his brother, friends, father, or him himself. The empathy for him and raw emotion really puts into perspective how horrible this crime was and how we have to make sure nothing like this ever happens again. And now, I can truly say that Matt Shepard is a friend of mine.

(Update: you know how I know this film is good? It's been 24 hours and I'm still as emotional about it as I was when I watched it)

My husband and I found each other in January 2014.
It all started as a long distance relationship, but two months later I had already moved to Norway. After two and a half years we are now finally married! Here is our wedding ceremony, and some of the things we did! THANK YOU SO MUCH for all the good wishes, and for making our day special. We are so grateful to have you all in our lives! #LoveisLove
