Thermal Sensitivity!

Thermal sensitivity is the ability of an infrared imaging radiometer to display a good thermal image when the contrast is less than ideal. In other words, an infrared camera with a good thermal sensitivity can distinguish an object in a field of view that has a very low temperature difference or Delta-T.

Building Thermograhy can be very difficult. Actually, it's one of the hardest Infrared Applications to learn. Having the right training, certification and equipment can make a big difference.

Here is an example of latent moisture on an interior wall, which is comprised of Sheetrock laid over a full brick wall. It's very difficult to discern, but there's a very faint thermal pattern in the middle of the image. Water was penetrating a parapet wall (capping/flashing), then flowing inside the brick cavity, till it show upon the interior wall as latent moisture.

The second infrared image is an Isotherm, which isolates the temperature difference between the dry area on the wall and the pattern associated with latent moisture. The Delta-T was less than 2 Degrees Fahrenheit! This could have easily gone undetected.

Bottom Line: It's very important to hire the right Thermographer with the right training and the right equipment.

Would love to hear of US experience in application of thermal imaging technology in general building inspection work or areas of new service delivery it opened up. Any insights?

Thx
