Freedom wasn't handed to all individuals after gaining our independence form Great Britain. African Americans were slaves to the white people fro years. 12 Years A Slave is a movie based on the true story of a free black man who lived in New York, but was taken captive and sold back into slavery in the south(Fox Searchlight). It is only after his twelve year struggle that he yet again experiences freedom.

The Song “Even When God is Silent” by Michael Horvitz was inspired by writing on a cellar wall where Jews had found safety from the German Gestapo. The simple lyrics “I believe in the sun even when it is not shining/I believe in love even when feeling it not/I believe in God even when God is silent/I believe” show that hope is not lost. The lyrics, “I believe in God when God is silent” explains that the hiding Jews believe that God is still there although he has not intervened on the chaos of the holocaust. I consider this song eerie and dramatic. The dynamics of the choir, in this version of the song, really bring out emotion and the tone of the holocaust. Much of Michael Horvitz’s music is inspired by life happenings and he continues to create choral pieces with deep emotion. He has created a beautiful piece from the horrific happenings of the holocaust.

Unable to Work by David Olère depicts a family who is unable to work, this characteristic of inability to work often led to a death sentence. The ghost hanging over the family represents that they will be executed because of their weakness and lack of physical strength. A Holocaust Art Exhibit explains that the smoke rising from the crematorium is in the shape of the SS insignia. The SS insignia is the rank of German forces; everyone employed in the military had a specific form of the SS insignia on their uniform. Surviving Auschwitz, David’s work shows the raw truth of the suffering from the Jews in concentration camps. David’s inspiration comes from the holocaust, as a survivor he lives to tell and show his experiences of what it was like to live in Auschwitz. In Auschwitz, David was responsible for working in a special unit to clean out the crematoriums of body parts and take out the dead in gas chambers (Klarsfeld).  Olère was responsible for one of the most demanding and horrific duties at any concentration camp. Although he never gave up hope and eventually, after almost two years, he was freed from Aushwitz. David died in 1985, but his paintings continue to represent the tragic time in history and the innocent lives lost.

This picture shows the “Denkmal fur die Ermordenten Juden Europas” or “the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe.”  Included in this memorial are 2,711 concrete slabs of various shapes and sizes that represent coffins of those killed in the Holocaust. Although there is little written about the artist, the inspiration clearly is from those who lost their lives in the Holocaust. Many tourists and German citizens visit this memorial every day and reflect on how innocent lives were lost and how Jews and many other minorities were persecuted based on their beliefs. The simple concrete slabs hold deep symbolism as they represent the many differences that people had and how many were killed no matter their age or physical build.

Based on a true story, Schindler’s list is a movie about one man’s journey to save thousands of Jews during the holocaust. The movie begins as a business owner by the name of Oscar Schindler opens his own factory to create Russian Military goods. Schindler strictly employs only Jewish citizens because he knows he can save their lives by providing a job for them. He also chooses to employ them because of cheap wages they will be receiving. As more Jews face prosecution, Schindler opens his factory not only for workers but also as a safe house for escaping Jews. Throughout the years of the holocaust, hundreds of Jews were saved by the actions of Oscar Schindler.  Because this movie and novel are based on one true story the inspiration came from Oscar Schindler himself. Oscar’s bravery, compassion and dedication were an inspiration not only to Steven Spielberg, the director of the movie, but also to many Jews and those facing persecution. Schindler saved many Jews and demonstrated how much appreciation individuals should have for saving just one life or many.

A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway
What was it like to serve in World War 1? Author Ernest Hemingway uses his own experience in the war to tell you the story through the soldier’s eyes. Lieutenant Frederic Henry was a young American who fought for the Italian army. Towards the beginning of the book, Lieutenant Henry was injured in battle and had to spend 6 months recovering. While recovering, he meets a woman, Catherine, who he falls in love with as she nurses him back to health. Soon Lieutenant Henry is sent back to the frontlines where the Italians were losing the war. Henry faced many challenges trying to survive the rest of the war, but eventually escapes to Catherine.
Ernest Hemingway was inspired by war to write this book because he was a part of the war. Hemingway fought in the ambulance corps in Italy, just like Lieutenant Henry. He used his own experiences to create a unique story on the war. The book shows the courage, challenges, and camaraderie of the troops. Hemingway also added romance to this story which differentiated it from other books. A Farewell to Arms was inspired by World War 1 because it is told from a soldier’s eye and written by someone who saw it firsthand.

A Soldier's Cemetery by John William Sreets
"There’s is yet an unmarked and unknown shrine, a broken plot, a soldier’s cemetery.” (Streets) This is a line from John William Streets poem A Soldiers Cemetery.  Instead of talking about what happens during the war, he talks about what happens when they die. Many soldiers are buried in unmarked graves; graves loved ones may never find. The poem talks about how all the young men died for liberty and the horror of what happened to them will live on.
The writer, John William Streets, actually wrote a journal about his inspiration for his poems. In one of his entries he wrote, “We soldiers have our views of life to express, though the boom of death is in our ears. We try to convey something of what we feel in this great conflict to those who think of us, and sometimes, alas! Mourn our loss.” (Streets) John William Streets was inspired to write this poem because, as a soldier, death is always lurking around the corner. When they die, they don’t get a proper identification or burial. Shortly after writing this poem, Streets went missing and his body wasn’t identified until 10 months later. As the last line in the poem states, Streets was inspired by all those who died, “But many a heart upon each simple cross, Will hang the grief, the memory of its loss.” (Streets)

Title: Pearl Harbor Movie
This movie was filmed in 2001 inspired by the attack on Pearl Harbor. This attack made a large impact on the lives of many people in different ways. Some died, had to fight in the war, lost loved ones, or just experience hardship. Michael Bay was inspired by this event because as a child he grew up loving action films. After learning about this event in school, he thought this would be such a cool film ("Michael Bay."). This inspired him to direct the movie Pearl Harbor which follows two friends Rafe and Danny and their love lives as they go off to war ("Pearl Harbor."). This movie won many awards and honors as well as gave Bay his first and only Oscar.
