Umahi flays communal clash in Izzi LGA, orders takeover of disputed land

Ebonyi State Government has taken over some hectares of land in Izzi Local Government Area to forestall future bloody dispute between the people of Mkpuma-Ekwoku and Ogwuzeru-Onweya communities.

Governor David Umahi made the pronouncement when he visited the disputed land, a few hours after three people were reported killed and many houses burnt by youths of the two communities on Sunday.
“Our position as government is that anywhere we have land dispute, government which is naturally the owner of land will take it over . So from today, that is 14th of November, the entire land that is in contention is hereby revoked and taken over by government. So, nobody will farm on this land again; it becomes government land,” a statement on Tuesday by Umahi’s Chief Press Secretary, Emma Anya, quoted him as saying.
The governor, who however, announced a donation of N10m for the rebuilding of the burnt houses and provision of relief for the victims, also directed the political appointees from the LGA to forfeit 50 per cent of their allowances towards the rebuilding of the houses.

The governor, in company with the Commissioner of Police, Mrs. Peace Ibekwe-Abdallah and other security chiefs in the state, described the killings and torching of houses as very barbaric.
“We also condemn the act of burning the houses. It is so barbaric and highly condemnable. We are very shocked that at this point of our development people could do such satanic act,” Umahi lamented.

He directed the security chiefs to fish out the perpetrators and ensure peace returned to the area.
The governor also urged the security chiefs to provide security for those who planted rice on the disputed land to harvest the rice.
He said, “I want to ask the Commissioner of Police that those who planted the rice must have to come and harvest it. Whether somebody is dead or not, this rice must be harvested. So the police people must be posted here and the owners of the rice must be encouraged to come and harvest it.”

Lauding the security agents for their timely intervention, Governor Umahi enjoined the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Francis Nwifuru, the Izzi LGA Caretaker Committee Chairman, Richard Idike and traditional rulers in the council to find a lasting solution to the dispute.
Government, according to the governor, would only return the land to the original owners once lasting peace returned.
“If there is lasting peace, we will give back the land to them, but until that is achieved, the land belongs to government,’’ he stated.

Umahi called on the people of Mkpuma-Ekwoku to remain calm and not contemplate reprisal as those responsible would be brought to book.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Nwifuru, who also spoke during the inspection, noted that the land dispute was politically-motivated, informing the governor that stakeholders in the area were already meeting to find a lasting end to the crisis.
“The incident wouldn’t have happened. It is politically- motivated; but we are trying to resolve it within ourselves. We apologise for what happened and we promise that such will not happen again.”
The LGA Chairman, Idike explained that the land dispute between Ogwuzeru-Onweya and Mkpuma-Ekwoku had defied amicable settlement in the past since 30 years.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

The attention of the good people of Ebonyi State, from all backgrounds, affiliations and orientations, are drawn to the frivolous and baseless story circulating within society in respect of the status of the court processes that have since been disposed and rested by various levels of legal adjudication in this country concerning the resounding election of the Governor of Ebonyi State, His Excellency, Engr David Nweze Umahi.

It has become imperative to provide all patriots with an accurate, verifiable and indisputable information and to allay any anxieties that may have been unnecessarily induced by rumour mongers and peddlers of worthless speculations.

Let it be categorically stated that there is no election litigation either in the regular courts or in the tribunals against the election of the incumbent Governor of Ebonyi State. There does not exist anywhere in the Nigerian federation, at any level of the judicial process – be it in the conventional courts, the customary courts or the Sharia courts, any form of challenge against the thunderous victory secured by Governor Umahi in the 2015 gubernatorial election in Ebonyi State. All such matters, where they existed, have been decisively and unequivocally ruled in favour of the Governor and rumour mongering or wishful thinking cannot alter that irreversible fact.

The mischief makers are simply dedicated to the negative preoccupation of attempting to distract the Governor. But he remains resolute, focused, dedicated and unshakable in his determination to reconstruct our society, to deepen and widen the depth and scope of development in Ebonyi State.

His Excellency remains ceaseless in his expression of gratitude to the honourable people of this great state for their support, their cooperation, their fervent prayers, their solidarity and cooperation. He urges us all to remain faithful in this disposition and march forward together as brothers and sisters for the elevation of our collective interests and our state.

PASTOR EZE NWACHUKWU EZE SHOULD FACE HIS CRIMINAL CHARGE IN COURT

We have in the past two weeks been monitoring the overt and covert determination by Eze Nwachukwu Eze, to drag the hard-earned positive reputation of His Excellency, Engr. David Umahi, to the mud and to distract him from his duty of delivering democracy dividends to Ebonyians.

Yesterday, Nov. 10, Eze N. Eze, who calls the name of the Lord but engages in all acts of destabilisation, called a retinue of journalists to a press conference in Abakaliki, and took his inglorious mission a notch further.

We are however happy that the public, especially Ebonyians have come to know him as an impostor who cannot speak for the All Progressives Congress (APC). Eze is neither the APC chairman in Ebonyi State nor a genuine member of the party. If he claims to be a genuine APC member, he should be more interested in finding ways to and means of uniting the party members.

We know Eze Nwachukwu Eze to be an agent of Abuja-based politicians whose desire is that peace does not reign in our state. We are aware that their primary aim is to cause chaos in the state in order to discredit the administration of Engr. David Umahi. The good thing is that Ebonyians know their antics. The people of Ebonyi who gave their mandate to Governor Umahi will never allow agents of the devil to have their negative desires come to pass.

Eze Nwachukwu Eze called a sponsored press conference even though he is not recognised by the APC national leadership as Ebonyi State chairman. Even though we know he has no atom of proof against Governor Umahi on his allegations, we know his angst. Eze N. Eze is peeved by the earth-shaking allegation made by Justice Ngwuta that Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu attempted to bribe him to have Governor Umahi’s mandate thwarted through the judiciary. But God is a living God. He exposed their plot and brought shame to them.

Pastor Eze is merely trying to justify the crumbs he gets from his pay- masters in Abuja. His press conference on Thursday, 10th November, is already causing disquiet between him and the journalists who attended it. It is known to us that Eze diverted almost 60 per cent of the money given to him by a lackey of Dr. Onu to organise the press conference. What a shame. Pastor Eze lacks credibility in all fronts. He is known to be facing criminal charge in the Ebonyi State High Court for forging the signatures of some genuine APC members endorsing him as the party’s chairman in Ebonyi State. We have documentary evidence about this which we intend to publish in due course.

The commercial pastor is also known to have openly sold empowerment forms to unemployed youths of Ohaukwu LGA claiming that it was Federal Government directive. What a heartless soul. He cashed in on the hapless situation of his kinsmen looking for means of livelihood. Indeed, Eze Nwachukwu can do anything just to get money.

The good thing however is that Governor Umahi had already put in place a programme in which over 4,500 unemployed youths and women of Ebonyi State are being provided the sum of N250, 000 to embark on business of their choice. Nigerians know that even the APC at the Federal level does not have any empowerment programme in which it gives out such huge amount of money.

Corruption allegation: Gov Umahi carpets Ebonyi APC factional chairman

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State has carpeted a cleric, Pastor Eze Nwachukwu Eze, over his recent outburst against him and his administration.

Eze, who parades himself as the state chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in recent time had been on Umahi's jugglar, calling on him to resign over what he considers as massive fraud in the state under his watch.

But the governor, in a statement on Friday by his Chief Press Secretary, Emma Anya, asked Eze to rather face his criminal charge in court and desist from distracting his government from delivering democracy dividends to Ebonyians.

According to the statement, Eze lacks credibility in all fronts to have the moral justification to beam a searchlight on the governor and his administration..

"Eze is known to be facing criminal charge in the state High Court for forging the signatures of some genuine APC members endorsing him as the party’s chairman in Ebonyi State," the statement claimed.
It added that the government had a "documentary evidence about this which we intend to publish in due course."

Umahi said in the statement that he was happy that the public was aware that Eze is an impostor who is neither the APC chairman in the state nor a genuine member of the party.

"If he claims to be a genuine APC member, he should be more interested in finding ways to and means of uniting the party members," he added.

He stated that Eze is an agent of Abuja-based politicians whose primary desire is to truncate the existing peace in the state and discredit his government.

But the governor stated that the good thing was that the people of Ebonyi who gave their mandate to him to exercise on their behalf would "never allow agents of the devil to have their negative desires come to pass."

Umahi added that he knew that Eze and his masters were peeved by "the earth-shaking allegation by Justice Ngwuta that Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu attempted to bribe him" in order to have his mandate "thwarted through the judiciary but God exposed their plot and brought shame to them."

Umahi also accused Eze of openly selling empowerment forms to unemployed youths of Ohaukwu LGA claiming that it was a Federal Government directive,
He pointed out that the good thing was that his government had internvened by empowering over 4,500 unemployed youths and women of Ebonyi State and provided the sum of N250, 000 to them to embark on business of their choice.

Umahi not in trouble and will never be

I read with utter amazement, stories in Saturday Vanguard and Saturday Nation that Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State is in trouble with the Economic and Financial Commission over N400m Diezani poll cash paid to the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party.

In the stories, the newspapers claimed that the commission had moved to seize two hotels belonging to the governor in Abakaliki and Port Harcourt and that fronts of His Excellency had refunded N90m out the N400m.

I took my time to go through the stale stories and came to the conclusion that the one of the reporters either forgot that he had with his own pen written and published the same issue on August 31 or that he allowed himself to be used by some people in the EFFC to bring the image of my principal to disrepute.

The only difference between the old publications and these latest but stale ones is where they mentioned last (Friday) night and the use of anonymous sources.

I attach copy of the August 31 story by Vanguard and Nov. 12 story by Saturday Vanguard to show that the reporters were merely feeding their readers with old information.

1. N400m Polls Cash: EFCC arrests Ebonyi gov’s brother, 2 others

On August 31, 201612:56 am

By Soni Daniel & Emeka Mamah

ABAKALIKI—Ebonyi State Governor’s brother, Austin Umahi, is in trouble with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for pocketing the sum of N400 million meant for compromising the 2015 presidential election in favour of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Austin, who chairs a chain of companies, was arrested along with two others-Chinyere Egwuche and Mabel Dikibo-for using some companies to divert the huge sum to themselves.

The EFCC said last night that three suspects, who are staff of Brass Engineering & Construction Nigeria Limited and Osborn La-Palm Royal Resort, were arrested because of their refusal to honour its invitation for questioning over ongoing probe into how the companies got involved in the sharing of the campaign funds.

EFCC Spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren said: “While Austin Umahi doubles as the Chairman of both companies, Chinyere Egwuche and Marbel Dikibo are also signatories to the companies’ accounts.

“Investigations by the commission revealed that the sum of N400 million was released by the Director of Finance, PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation, Senator Nenadi Usman, to PDP Ebonyi State for the 2015 presidential election.”

It was, however, discovered that the said fund was immediately moved from Fidelity Bank Abakaliki on March 27, 2015, where it was initially deposited, to an Access Bank Abakaliki account. Maxwell Umahi further moved N100 million and N300 million respectively into the accounts of Brass Engineering and Construction Nigeria Limited and Osborn La-Palm Royal Resort respectively.

From the account, Chinyere Egwuche subsequently withdrew the N300 million paid into the account of Osborn La-Palm, which according to her was used to finance further construction of Osborn La-Palm Hotels in Abakaliki, Uburu and Port Harcourt, while N100 million paid into the account of Brass Engineering & Construction Nigeria Limited was transferred to a certain David Umahi Faith Foundation.

Uwujaren said last night that although investigation was ongoing, the said companies had been traced to the Ebonyi State governor.

But the National Vice Chairman, South East zone of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and younger brother to Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi state, Austin Umahi yesterday debunked reports that he was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

Mr Umahi, in a telephone conversation with our reporter said at no time was he arrested by the Commission.

“I wasn’t arrested, there is nothing like that. Will I be arrested and I am picking my calls and talking to you. It is trash, nothing like that happened.

“What did they even say I did. I am just hearing it for the first time right now from you.

I will advise that people should properly investigate before writing their reports,” he said.

2. N23bn Diezani poll cash: Ebonyi Gov, Umahi in trouble
On November 12, 20162:55 am

By Soni Daniel, Northern Region Editor

THE Governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi, is in trouble with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. Umahi Umahi. The commission said last night it had discovered that Umahi collected the sum of N400 million allocated to the PDP in the state to compromise last year’s Presidential poll but he diverted the cash to two of his companies and used it to build two hotels in Port Harcourt and Abakaliki.

The commission has already arrested and questioned many suspects, including bank officials, who have made statements linking the governor and his companies.

EFCC sources said, “This case involving some chieftains of the PDP in Ebonyi State and some companies emanated from the alleged N23,2999,705,000, disbursed by the erstwhile Petroleum Resources Minister, Mrs Diezani Alison Madueke during the 2015 Presidential election out of which N400million was traced to Ebonyi State.

“In the State, Kelechi Igwe (incumbent Deputy Governor), Fidelis Nwanwko and Ambassador Frank N. Ogbuewu collected the money to prosecute the 2015 general election.

“The duo of Fidelis Nwankwo and Ambassador Frank N. Ogbuewu were invited and they disclosed that they collected the N400million from Fidelity Bank and handed it over to Access Bank on the directive of the then Deputy Governor who is now the incumbent Governor, Engr. David Umahi. “The Operations Manager of Access Bank Abakaliki was invited and he revealed that the money was paid into the accounts of Osborn La-Palm Royal Resort Ltd and Brass Engineering & Construction Nig. Ltd. domiciled in Abakaliki.

“The statement of the accounts of the companies that were analysed disclosed that the sum of three N300million was paid into the account of Osborn La-Palm Royal Resort Ltd and N100 million into the account of Brass Engineering & Construction Nig. Ltd and subsequently withdrawn by Chinyere Egwuche.

“The movement of the fund from one account to another and the subsequent cash withdrawal of N300million in tranches of N50million are clear features of money laundering.

“The above companies were discovered to have been incorporated by the incumbent Governor of Eonyi State in 1993 and 2011 respectively.

“Consequently, letters of invitation were written to the Managing Directors of the companies where the money was paid but the letters were returned undelivered as the addressees refused to collect them.

“Thereafter, Austin Umahi, Maxwell Umahi, Chinyere Egwuche and Mabel Dikibo were arrested. Investigation revealed that Chinyere Egwuchu and Mabel Dikibo were the signatories to the account of the companies.

“It was also discovered that one of the suspects, Chinyere withdrew the N300million paid into the account of Osborn La-Palm which, according to her was used to further construction of Osborn La-Palm hotels in Abakaliki, Uburu and Port Harcourt, while the N100million paid into the account of Brass Engineering and Construction Nigeria Limited was transferred to a certain David Umahi Faith Foundation. They volunteered statement and were released on bail to reliable sureties.

“In furtherance of this investigation, the property belonging to the companies were identified and the Commission’s stickers “Under Investigation” were placed on them. However, legal machineries are being set in motion to seal the companies in case the suspects refused to wholly refund the monies that were fraudulently collected by them.”

In the meantime, the sum of N90million has been refunded. Investigation is still in progress,” a top EFCC official confirmed.

I am therefore at a loss on what they stood to gain by these publications. It rankles my imagination that journalists no longer ask relevant questions or read through documents or statements made available to them by anonymous sources.

I state here once again that Governor Umahi established his business empire, including Osborn La Palm Royal Resort long before he became the deputy governor.

He had before serving as the state’s deputy governor relinquished his interests in the companies he founded as required by law.

I also use this medium to let the writers and newspapers know that the governor cannot be in trouble over the poll cash because as a sitting governor, he enjoys immunity from prosecution.

He cannot be in trouble since the money in question was neither used by him nor any of the mentioned companies. The EFFC knows this. It should therefore know where to beam its searchlight.

For those whose desire is to see His Excellency drown; I have a message for them: You will be shocked to your bone marrow.

To Umahi’s associates, admirers and all other Ebonyians who are highly pleased with the unexpected transformation of the state, I say expect more. His Excellency remains undaunted in his avowal to make the state Nigeria’s best, economically and structurally.

Give Gov Umahi his full mark
Don't distract him

Simbad..
Gov Umahi the man of Peace

Promise made...Promise kept

on May 10, 2008, billows of smoke emerged on Ezillo horizon it became apparent that war was just beginning in one of the then peaceful Ebonyi communities. No sooner had the billows started than human heads begun falling like breadfruits. Riches were reduced to wretchedness, palaces turned to forests, hunger let loose on the aged and kids who would have been in schools, and the agriculturally superabundant land became ‘blood-logged.’ What was left was the shadow of what was.

Not even the deployment of joint military taskforce could quench the carnage. Before one could make sense of what was happening Ebonyi brains were reduced to ashes, peaceful road-users were either targeted or caught up in bonfires as Ezillo community descended into infamy, took a somersault in historical dialectics and opened a deep wound in Ebonyi history, one of the stories we have reserved for our children in next generations.

With the war, the community has acquired typical vocabularies of Niger-Delta: bonfire, gunshots, blown-up, killing, military check-points, etc. One can also describe it in terms of Assad’s Syria: desolate, ruins, walking shadows of blinking idiots with deformed psyche. Passerby can capture it in the language of Somalia and Dafur refugee camps: rags spread at flower edges; cooking pots littered every place; mats leaning on walls, etc.

No one would have suspected that the war which broke out following a disagreement between an Ezillo man and an Ezza man on the position to erect 4x4m thatched-telephone booth would wreck such monumental rupture that took sacred lives, burnt property, shattered relationship and left both sides of the divide as well as the unfortunate victims of other places psychologically deformed.

The guerilla ambush strategy adopted in the war was strange, inhumane, unprecedented and indiscriminate. Men turned to vampires with unlimited libido for blood of just anyone they could see. Pregnant mothers had their wombs ripped up as their innocent unborn babies cried to heaven for vengeance. Innocent kids went to bed with high hopes of celebrating new year but not even the chaplets of Jesus’ redemption they wore could save them from the hands of cannibals who slashed their throats and walked away like giants refreshed. Bet me some still feel justified and pride in the actions they took.

Road users were blocked and burnt to ashes at several occasions under the close watch of God. Lives became too cheap. Izzi mourned bitterly. Ikwo wept uncontrollably. Afikpo stood speechless and goose-pimpled. Ohanivo wore sack clothes. Eastern brothers and sisters vibrated in anger for their victims. Cross River State fasted on a feast day and wanted revenge for their illustrious victim. Others who were not affected mocked us as primitive people as if World wars took place among primitive Asians and Europeans. No one should ever pray for war.

The intriguing thing about war is that it is easy to start but not easy to end. Since that carnage, several efforts have been made to find a lasting solution to the crisis and resettle the communities. At the moment one would think something was about coming out of it, another breach of confidence would crop up from one side and would dash off the entire prospect for peace. But no effort to achieve peace is ever a waste. At the long run, the warring parties gradually realize how unattractive war is and get ready to make a deal.

It is on this ground that I commend the recent steps of Ebonyi State government to finding a permanent solution to Ezillo/Ezza-Ezillo impasse. The news that the Peace Committee on the crisis with the effort of the Ebonyi State Commissioner for Peace and Border Securities have got the two warring communities to agree on terms that will lead to peace is heart-cheering and would be a significant achievement of Engr. Dave Umahi led-government.

The deal which covers delineation, demarcation and allocation of the two communities will also see government stepping in with reconstruction, provision of basic infrastructures as well as compensation to the victims of the war. To this effect, implementation committee is already set up to ensure the translation of this paper agreement into reality.

History will be grateful to the government and individuals who worked to get the two communities to the dialogue table. History will be grateful too to the both parties for keeping the past behind and chatting new course for development as this may not be the first time they came close to agreement. The disposition of the state government to build access road and other projects in the area deserves commendation. The composition of the implementation committee members gives hope that peace is in the offing. Now is the time to tread with caution to see that this works out.

Everyone has a responsibility in making Ezillo peace work. Government must not give up nor allow parochial interest or pride to blur the remaining stages. They must commit time, energy, resources, sincerity and goodwill in implementing the agreement. They should do less talk and more action and should not sell out a suspicious body language as the enemies who brought that war are still among us and may at least suspicion instigate breach of confidence.

Ezillo and Ezza communities must give peace a chance and keep their minds receptive as in the long run they will be the highest beneficiaries. They must give up attitude that stalled previous effort and submit to loss-loss situation for win-win take-home for the sake of peace.

The generality of Ebonyians must put aside differences and come together to make the paper agreement a reality. This will enable government to gain resilience and extend the same gestures to other warring communities in the state. Ebonyians must take a cue from animals that eschew their hostility and congregate without molestation in an island whenever there is flooding.

Certain moments of history are driven by evil wind of political doctrine, religious convictions and tribal philosophies unimaginable, lacking standards by which to judge and evaluate what is happening. Ezillo/Ezza communities went through that moment of drift. Saying who was right or wrong will postpone our response to the problem.

Any community that wants to go far must go together. We cannot find respect unless we walk together. It is not without reason that Christ gave His body to the executioners, His cloaks to soldiers but to His twelve lieutenants, He gave peace which according to Him, the world cannot give. Immanuel Kant in The Perpetual Peace challenged warring people to dialogue as the only option.

We cannot go on reinforcing tribal ideology. If unity stops receiving reinforcement, it does not stagnate but disintegrates. Come to think of those innocent citizens dispatched to their graves by mindless war. They did not commit any crime deserving of such horrific death. They were just unfortunate victims of an era we exchanged our reason for ego, when we sought solution where it does not exist and held ourselves in hatred and distrust.

The new peace deal conveys the urgency of dialogue always through the scholarship of cultural tolerance and moral obligation. Ekumaenyi, Ehugbo, Ohanivo and other sister tribes should always see themselves as a single moral community and should come together in moments of misunderstanding in cultural dialogue to caution sons and daughters and reinforce sanity. The watch phrases should be- goodwill with sincerity and promotion of Ebonyi values. This should guide Ebonyi future.

If both parties have accepted the peace deal we cannot but thank Dave Umahi for the gift we cannot refuse. Unfortunately, we cannot enjoy this peace completely until those who are still recalcitrant rise to give Dave his full mark in Ezillo. That is the only way not to politicize it.
