"Analogies in educational tasks and self perception"
VWER Thursday, October 12 at noon SLT (Pacific time)

Facilitator: Marly Milena who will use voice; all other participants will use text

ANALOGIES

From Merriam-Webster dictionary: <A resemblance in some particulars between things
otherwise unlike>. Similes and metaphors are two types of analogies…
http://examples.yourdictionary.com/analogy-examples-for-kids.html
And Google “Using metaphors in teaching” for many useful links.

Let’s have some fun! Marly will encourage exploration of how analogies can help us with educational tasks and self-perceptions. We will play with questions she poses which are designed to make bridges between your interests/talents and what you have not
ordinarily applied in your teaching domain. We will also talk about concepts of ourselves as educators using analogies an of analogies between the SL learning experience and RL education. Please have paper, a pen and some colored markers or pencils at your work station.

Discussion: "Creating tutorials in virtual worlds."
Virtual Worlds Education Round Table, at 12 noon SL time on Thursday 28 September 2017.

Topic: Creating tutorials in virtual worlds.
How can we create tutorials for use in virtual worlds? Do you use experiential methods? Are there particular tools which are useful? Do you use applications outside the virtual worlds, for example web-based? What topics or activities most need tutorials? Have other people created tutorials you like? Discussion will be in text chat.

Virtual Worlds Education Round Table, at 12 noon SL time on Thursday 17 August 2017.

Topic: Hypergrid Business announces "Educators sour on virtual worlds." That conclusion may be too sweeping, since the evidence is limited to Second Life, but it is still useful to consider whether virtual worlds are living up to the potential that they once seemed to offer. What do you think? Selby will lead the discussion

Virtual Worlds Education Round Table, at 12 noon SL time on Thursday 10 August 2017.

Topic: Metaphor and simile in education. Do you use metaphors and similes when you are teaching? When you teach in virtual worlds, do you translate these literally into 3D? What metaphors would you use to describe education and your teaching inside and outside virtual worlds? Do you think these are the same as what your students would use, and the same as what university managers would use in describing and marketing education? Do we take enough account of how metaphors are used and interpreted in diffierent countries? This will be a discussion in text chat.

Discussion " Information grounds - for educators and learners" Virtual Worlds Education Round Table, at 12 noon SL time on Thursday 3 August 2017.

Topic: Information grounds - for educators and learners. "Information Grounds" are places where people have gathered not primarily to share information, but for some other purpose (e.g. health clinic, church, cafe) but an interactive flow of information is a by-product (Fisher and Naumer, 2006). What "information grounds" have educators encountered to learn about living, learning and teaching in virtual worlds? Are all the information grounds in the virtual world? How do we let each other know about them? Then - how do we help our learners engage with these information grounds? This will be a discussion in text chat.

Topic: Educational multiplayer games online - discussion led by ThinkererSelby Evans

Virtual Worlds Education Round Table, at 12 noon SL time on Thursday 22 June 2017.

Topic: *Educational multiplayer games online"
Educational games provide low cost educational opportunities, if they succeed in motivating learners. They should be especially useful on websites where the target audience wants to learn about the topic. Or they could be helpful for a parent or mentor to help a learner. Playing a game with other learners or with a mentor could add motivation. With the arrival of web-worlds, such a game could be played in a virtual environment The players could be either a learner and mentor or fellow learners. The advantage the web-world would offer is ease of access.
The web-world can be available at home, on a Chromebook.
Can we find adequate instructional resources to support this kind learning?
