SAVE THE DATE! A one day conference will be held at the Concord Junior High on November 16, 2017. This event will focus on how technology can enable young people to reach their potential. The intended audience for this fall regional event is students grades 5-12.

The keynote speaker, Asmaa Elkeurti, is a software engineer and programmer from Pear Deck. There will be four concurrent session blocks, and a student panel assisted by the keynote speaker. Each of the four-session blocks will include three concurrent options, totaling twelve sessions offered. Local teachers will partner with a student or two to co-host session options with the purpose being that the student(s) should be the main facilitator and the teacher in a more advisory or assistant role.

In addition, a makerspace playground option will be available during the morning sessions, and another available during the afternoon sessions. This will allow students to attend the keynote together, choose between various session options, and attend the makerspace playground if they wish. The makerspace playground will be overseen by a teacher but highlight four different interactive, hands-on options led by students so others can enhance 21st-century skills, explore tech-driven activities, and further build a real-world application for digital leadership.

The conference agenda and session descriptions will be online to feature the use of technology in a real-world application. Current and relevant tech tools will be highlighted, including Pear Deck, texthelp, Equatio, ReadWrite, EDpuzzle, and GAFE.

Snacks, food, and swag bags will also be included in the conference experience. Registration is free. Students can bring their own lunch or purchase the $5.00 lunch (details will be on the registration form).

Space is limited to ten teams of five members each. Registration will open later this week. I will email everyone who has completed the HSDL advisor registration form and post here in the community.

Rushton Hurley's Next Vista's fall 90-second creative educational video contest is well underway. The contest is easily wrapped into other projects - at core, the idea is to creatively explain something one might encounter in school in 90 seconds or less.

Creative Fire '17 Main Page

These videos can be simple editing of footage, narrated slides or images, stop-motion, or screencasts. All of these approaches have yielded finalists in past contests. Below is a page with over two hundred finalists from the many contests we've run. Pass that link on to your students, and have them explore the different styles of videos students around the world have made to show what they learn in some clever way.

The deadline for Creative Fire '17 is Friday, December 8th, though you can score an extra couple of points by submitting your videos on or before the early bonus deadline, which is Thursday, November 9th. The main goal with the early deadline is to get feedback and make your submission stronger. That's fair? Of course - we will do that for everyone whose submission isn't up to speed!

As always, there are certificates, gift cards, and international glory to be won. Hard to turn down an opportunity for international glory, we're thinking.

Hi all! I am currently mentoring a new Google Innovator, Mary Ellen Yonkers. Her innovator project is designing a badging program for her middle school students, GSuite Champions. She has some great ideas and wants to launch her work with students in the fall. I wondered if anyone would like to connect with her around the project? We are still discussing iterations, and she was excited to connect with others beyond her PLN.

I will be facilitating the course- DIGITAL APPLICATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITY- which is DOE code 4528.

REQUEST: What course number(s) are you using to offer a HS Class for your HSDL program?

I am going to invite the folks with this question to join the community, but I thought it would be helpful if the conversation got started now.

Thanks in advance for helping colleagues and a future HSDL advisor!
