So, I thought I would look at the source of the data, which is the very credible Australian Bureau of Met, and pulled the monthly survey reports here. http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/mwr/
The interesting bit of information is localed in the front meta, namely this qualification which is NEVER qualified by the media
"The climatological averages shown in the text and tables are generally long-term means based on observations from the years
Look on any climate data that extends BEFORE 1961-1990 and a blind person can see that 1961 - 1990 is a cool period historically globally.
