Millennium Bridge 2014
Another shot from the Nikon Photo 24 London event. If you look back through my stream you’ll see various shots of the bridge that I took at last year’s event. I was lucky enough then to win one of the competition categories which was a thrill; link below :- https://plus.google.com/113397556963932135447/posts/5uiSKnV6UUK
This time round I couldn't resist taking a few more shots but varied it with a different lens.
Opened in June 2002 this architectural marvel, which resembles a neon blue dinosaur skeleton, was shut almost immediately after an unexpected swaying motion set in when participants of a charity walk tried to open it. Londoners nicknamed it the 'wobbly bridge'. It didn't re-open for a further two years while modifications were made to eliminate the problem, (huge steel dampers were added to the structure).
The bridge crosses the Thames in front of St Paul's Cathedral and was the subject of a competition organised by Southwark Council & RIBA Competitions. The winning entry was an innovative "blade of light" effort from Arup, Foster & Partners and Sir Anthony Caro. More info here if you're interested including the cause of the infamous wobble. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millennium_Bridge,_London
