Open letter to the CBF Purest.

Dear Sirs
Many times in my life I have heard the quote "The only constent is change", until now that was a random, obvious observations to rationalize the demise of the antiquated or promotion of the automated. Never before has it accured to me that change itself may be just free enterprise elbowing over the less efficient, or in the simplest terms, less profitable mousetrap for the "New and Improved", Ronco version! (Google Ron Popeil)

For many decades College Football was the bastian of constent, the uniforms, the traditions, the rivalries and the fans! A safe haven from the lethal dynamics that corrode and destroy, the University of Michigan, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, University of Southern California, these were not punchlines, they were Flagships, moreover, they were idealism at its finest. Every region had one, in the south it was Alabama, the plains it was Oklahoma, the east had Army and Navy (even Penn State). The perfect representatives of a way of life and belief. You would take on the spirit of your school and its iconic leaders, often to a fault, but that was really just the price of admission when being lead by Paul "Bear"Bryant or Wayne Woodrow Hayes. You would be lucky to see your school play on TV three or four times a season, and that's if they were good! You understood what the mission of your team was and you stood behind it. That's what made College Football the greatest game on the face of the earth.

Somewhere it got lost, probably around the time war rooms of multi media moguls got the blood thirst of the 80's, this will be reffered to from here on out as the "Gordon Gecko Syndrom" or GGS. Somebody got the idea that greed is good and nothing is sacred, not in matters of money atleast, it cures all. We can sell this stuff, and like anything with this much substance, dilute it to make more.....enter the Bowl Coalition then Bowl Alliance and finally the Bowl Championship Series.
Why would you not want an undisputed National Champion?
All were gonna do is rotate the Championship game between the 4 major bowls and place the #1 team vs #2 team with our criteria and expertise.
What a great plan, damn near perfect, after all we just split the 1997 NC title, there will be no more of that, right?
With every action, there is a reaction, we'll call it "Cause and Effect", seems appropriate.
The BCS pumped in huge amounts of money, the likes these Division I schools had never imagined, coaches were on carousels, think back before the BCS and try to remember any head coach leading two different team to NC's in the same conference! Not just the same conference but the SAME division!!!!
Even the unsuccessful coached at multiple schools in the same division. (Houston Nutt, Arkansas and Ole Miss)
Money was starting to destroy our fabric, no longer did our leaders embody us, they embodied the GGS(Greed is Good), the mass media exsposure brought in new Nielsen faces and the money became intoxicating. Our leaders began walking the fine line of infractions, no longer the spirit of our schools a concern, just win baby win! To the new Nielsen's, this was great, the WWE (WWF back then) but its real. To the die-hard, we couldn't abandon what we've embraced, this was our religion, our belief, our souls, our way of life. They got us alright and there was not a damn thing we could have done about it.
To quote the Great Bobby Knight "When rape is inevitable you may as well enjoy it", that's where the Purest where, unfortunately.
As time went on the product had to be diluted again, just like any good drug dealer knows when the demand exceeds the supply, you gotta cut it, so the BCS made its lethal cut and now there were five games not four. Programs figured out formulas to ensure their payday, play shit for OOC oponents, consisting of DII schools and really bad non BCS conference teams. Hey why not, the schools and coaches had a whole lot to lose after all and besides it funnels money to these programs, right?
Re: Grambling
Example,
Ohio State OOC opponents 1988
Syracuse
Pittsburg
LSU

Ohio State OOC opponents 2013
Buffalo
Florida A&M
California
San Diego State

(And as we know, the Buckeyes were not the only one)

Conferences were made to scramble, tv money and revenues were being devoured by the inequities of old agreements causing those less fortunate to join other out of region conferences.
Now we know these conferences are not doing this out of the kindness of their own heart, they are now able to play a conference championship game, (must have 12 ) more revenue and BCS exsposure, which shifts the traditional scheduling!

All this for what?
LSU vs Alabama (2)

Just sayin....

Point to all of this is we've sold out our game, the safe haven has been destroyed, the corrosive touch of greed has molested the Iron Clad vessel we called home. The Playoffs are the perfect new form of the BCS, stir up controversy and expand infinitely!
Its a sad day when we exchange traditions and identity for a singular trophy!

+Regan Gassaway you have convinced me.

With less than 50 days remaining from the start of the college football season, a significant portion of South Carolina’s 2014 recruiting class has not yet arrived on campus.
