So one thing that has bugged me about Star Wars. As I'm in the construction trade, the scope of the death star is mind boggling. The sheer amount of time it would take, man power, financing... It's beyond fantasy, it's immersion breaking almost.
But... It occurs to me that a space faring civilization would have a fully automated construction process. With the right programming an autonomous space factory could assemble any size space station, given time, by harvesting the resources available in space. Possibly even consuming an entire uninhabited planet (or inhabited given the empire's propensity for destroying planets).
I don't actually remember any references to construction droids, so such an idea probably isn't canonical, but there's a free idea for any sci-fi writers here who are maybe struggling with how your own super sized space stations actually get built.
