~*~ Android game development tutorial - Make an Android game today! ~*~

The Android framework provides a set of 2D-drawing APIs that allow us to render your own custom graphics onto a canvas.

Sometimes when drawing 2D graphics, we draw our graphics directly to a Canvas. Drawing to a Canvas, is better when our application needs to regularly re-draw itself.

Applications such as video games should be drawing to the Canvas on its own. However, there's more than one way to do this:

In the same thread as our UI Activity, wherein we create a custom View component in our layout, we call invalidate() and then handle the onDraw() callback.
Or, in a separate thread, wherein we manage a SurfaceView and perform draws to the Canvas as fast as our thread is capable (we do not need to request invalidate()).

Draw with a Canvas

When we're writing an application (which does not require a significant amount of processing or frame-rate speed) in which we would like to perform specialized drawing and/or control the animation of graphics, we should consider creating a custom View class and drawing with a Canvas in View.onDraw(). So, just create a custom View class by extending the View class and override the onDraw(Canvas canvas) method. This method will be called by Android to request that our View draw itself. This is where we will perform all our calls to draw through the Canvas.

In the event that we're drawing within the onDraw() callback method, the Canvas is provided for us and we need only place our drawing calls upon it. Android will only call onDraw() as necessary.

Each time that our application is prepared to be drawn, we must call invalidate(). This indicates that we would like our View to be drawn and Android will then call our onDraw() method. In order to request an invalidate from a thread other than our main Activity's thread, we must call postInvalidate().

Suppose we want to create the animation of a flying duck.
We have several duck frame images, so we need to create an array of Bitmap.
Bitmap duck[] = new Bitmap[10];
and instantiate each object in the constructor.
duck[0] = BitmapFactory.decodeResource(duckView.getResources(),
R.drawable.duck0);
duck[1] = BitmapFactory.decodeResource(duckView.getResources(),
R.drawable.duck1);
.
.
.
We assume that we have put all the duck frames(duck0.png, duck1.png...duck9.png) in drawable folder.

Inside onDraw() we call drawBitmap(...).
canvas.drawBitmap(ducks[duckFrame], left, top, null);

Also, inside onDraw() just increment duckFrame by 1.

Now come to the looping part.
We need to create an Handler object first.
Handler handler;
and instantiate in the constructor.
handler = new Handler();
And we need to create a runnable object. Inside the run() method we can call invalidate() which

will call our onDraw() method instantly.
private Runnable runnable = new Runnable() {
public void run() {
invalidate();
}
};

One final step. Now, we need to call the postDelayed() method with the handler object and pass the runnable object with delay (in miliseconds, normally the value should be30).
handler.postDelayed(runnable, delay);

Congratulations! We now know, how to create 2D animation in Android.
Next step is to actually create an amazing, creative, wonderful 2D motion game with coding and run to test in emulator or real device. We have created a 2D game based on this concept.
