Harris's Hawk (Parabuteo unicinctus) at Mejia, Arequipa - Peru_October 2018

The adult Harris's Hawk has very distinctive brown-white plumage; the individuals photographed are immature. This raptor is more sociable (and intelligent?) than other birds of prey, breeding cooperatively in some populations, and even hunting in groups, where two or more birds work together to flush and chase prey.

Harris's can be found throughout Peru's coast, although sightings farther south are rare. Fortunately, there's a healthy population at Mejia.

Finally found the time for some birding!

Hi, my name is Paul Silva and I live in Peru, South America. I go birding every time I can find the time for it, and have been doing it for the past 8 or so years. I’ve been lucky enough to be able to visit Peru’s Manu National Park multiple times (birding paradise!), and remember, on one particular trip, our guide being very knowledgeable about the local fauna, and birds in particular… of course he was carrying a little book called Birds of Peru (greatest book of all time), which might have helped him a bit.

His passion for birds made instant sense to me (I’ve been an avid “bird watcher” for as long as I can remember, only I didn’t know it), and now I can proudly and joyfully say that birding is one of few hobbies (lifestyles?) I’m stuck with, and trust me, I’ve tried a bunch…

I have full-time non-bird-related job and am a new-ish parent, so I really can’t say at this point how much time I’ll have left for content creation, but I’ll do my best and hope you enjoy it!

See you around and happy birding!
