A Project Concept To Eliminate Waste Plastic
A Project to eliminate the menace caused by plastic carry bags and such other plastic items thrown away in open.
The thrown away plastic carry bags and other plastic items cause great threat and concern to the environment. Plastic is non-degradable. Poly bags, disposable plastic tumblers and several such items that thrown away recklessly pose formidable threat to all locations such as mountains, plains, water etc. in several ways. It is potentially eternal. Sometimes it creates backflow in sewage. Plastic bags are found to be causing immeasurable harm to marine life. Streams and rivers too are affected. In mountainous areas the scourge intensifies. As an omnipresent danger, the waste plastic is to be eliminated.
Unfortunately there is no safe way to eliminate this threat. Recycling is unlikely for two reasons. Firstly at about six microns of thickness it takes upwards 250 bags to make one kilo of plastic which at best fetch only one rupee or so. Secondly, plastic cannot be continuously recycled since most carry bags are made of recycled materials and their future use to the reprocessing industry is limited. Incinerating and burning for other purposes result in air pollution and toxic ash.
The short - cut way found out by authorities has been to ban use of plastic carry bags as far as possible. Further, some Non Government Organizations have tried to urge the public to limit the use of plastic with little effect. In some cases, Governments have come forward to check the use of plastic through legislature. This adversely affect livelihood of certain group of people.
In spite of all these efforts, the crucial situation remains unaffected because of non availability of a suitable and cheap alternative. Without presenting a suitable substitute, it is not legitimate to ban such a useful item. It is at this particular circumstance an Indian consultancy concern began to think of using the waste plastic as a value added construction material. After conducting certain experimental works they found that waste plastic can be used as an ingredient raw material in manufacturing concrete construction blocks. Hollow blocks are used very commonly in the building construction field in India. Hollow blocks are not having so strength to use it alone in making house walls. But these are lavishly used in multi storied buildings to make room walls in between pillars. Similarly, it is used to make compound walls, road side walls etc. This made them think rationally to use plastic mixed concrete within the block to fill the hollow part of such block.

Their first experiment was to examine how the plastic and concrete will act when the both are mixed. For this they collected waste plastic items including carry bags of various thickness, pvc items etc and turned them to tiny pieces so as to mix easily with each other. Firstly, they stirred well them putting in a container. When it is mixed well water has been poured in small quantities and stirred well again. Then they found that it has turned to be a well mingled mixture. Then they put them in a mould and left it to be settled for about twenty four hours. After that the block has been transferred to a water tank where it remained for about five days.
After that they took it out and found it to be a well settled unbreakable block. The plastic particles and concrete particles could not be separated even after using force to separate them.
Taking confidence, they then manufactured a construction block for which they have made mould of 12x6x6 inch measurement. In the mould they have placed concrete made up of rock sand, rock chips and cement in a better ratio at about one inch thickness. Then a plastic coated wire net piece with equal area of the concrete placed in the mould. Then a wire net container like small structure has been placed in the centre of the wire net piece already placed in the mould leaving about 1.5 inch area in all sides.
Then this wire net container has been filled with the plastic mixed concrete. After that the ordinary concrete has been filled in the space around the wire net container. Then a wire net piece as it was placed at the beginning has been placed over the waste plastic-concrete mixture filled wire net container and concrete filled at other places. Then sufficient concrete has been placed over the wire net and filled the remaining height of the mould. Now, the mould has been filled with ordinary concrete, wire net pieces and plastic mixed concrete so as to form a complete construction block. Then they left the structure at its place for a while and lifted the mould leaving the block on the wooden plank on which it was created. Now it seemed to be a perfect concrete block which remained there unmoved for twenty four hours and then put it in a small water container. They allowed it to stay there for seven days. After that it has been taken out of water and examined with the help of a highly experienced construction supervisor. After examining the block, the supervisor expressed full satisfaction on the product.

This experiment well establishes that waste plastic reinforced construction block, as it is called by them is a better alternative for eliminating the danger of waste plastic in reciprocate way. This generates employment opportunities in addition to eliminating the waste plastic threat.
