Google announces Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL

After numerous leaks, Google today offically took the wraps off their flagship smartphones for this year — Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL.

The Pixel 2 sports a 5-inch AMOLED display at a resolution of 1920x1080, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 octa-core processor, 4GB of RAM, 64GB or 128GB of internal storage, an 8MP f/2.4 front facing camera, a 12.2MP f/1.8 rear camera with dual pixel phase detection and OIS, Bluetooth 5.0, IP67 dust and water resistance, a fingerprint scanner on the back, a USB Type-C port, a 2,700mAh battery, and Android 8.0 Oreo.

The Pixel 2 XL, on the other hand, sports a larger 6-inch P-OLED display at a resolution of 2880x1440 (18:9 aspect ratio), a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 octa-core processor, 4GB of RAM, 64GB or 128GB of internal storage, an 8MP f/2.4 front facing camera, a 12.2MP f/1.8 rear camera with dual pixel phase detection and OIS, Bluetooth 5.0, IP67 dust and water resistance, a fingerprint scanner on the back, a USB Type-C port, a 3,520mAh battery, and Android 8.0 Oreo.

Both Pixel and Pixel 2 XL feature Edge Sense, which will allow you to squeeze the frame to launch the Google Assistant. A preview version version of Google Lens — the company's AI-powered object recognition platform — will also be built into the search bar and Google Photos, and it will be able to recognize phone numbers, art, movie posters, and much more.

Pixel 2 will come in Just Black, Clearly White, and Kinda Blue colors, where as the Pixel 2 XL will only come in Just Black and Black & White. Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL will cost $649 and $849, respectively. Both models will be available through the Google Store and Verizon, who is the "exclusive" carrier partner. As and added bonus, all Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL purchases will come with a free Google Home Mini (including those sold through Best Buy)¹.

"Do Not Distrube While Driving" comes to Pixel 2
The Pixel 2 also has a "Do not disturb while driving" mode, like iPhone in iOS 11

I don't know about you, but I'm starting to believe that Google is competing hard for the number one spot. Even if it means to, eating it's own Android OEMs in the process, Google wants to pack practical features in its hardware, by coupling it with their already amazing software and authoritative AI Google Assistant.

Accompanied with the two new Pixel devices (Pixel and Pixel XL), Google has released an app called "Pixel Ambient Services". I'd like to call it PAS for short. As in, with the Pixel 2, you'll "pass the other drivers that are distracted with using their non-Pixel 2 phones while driving". I know, it's corny, but bare with me. With PAS, the #Pixel 2 will use Bluetooth and device motion to determine when to activate a do not disturb mode to keep you from being distracted while driving. Now this probably won't be able to tell of you're a driver or passenger, but it's still nice to see a large company like +Google provide a feature that combats distracted driving. Since we just can't put our phones down. Other companies such as Samsung and Apple have implemented this on their consecutive devices as well.

Here’s what Google needs to announce tomorrow to get me to put away my iPhone

Tomorrow at 1PM Eastern, +Google will yet again romance us with what their new hardware team, +Made by Google, has been working on. Thanks to a sea of leaks from +Android Police, +Droid Life, and +@evleaks, there isn’t much left for astonishment.

You can watch the live stream here: https://plus.google.com/+DerekRoss/posts/e46W4R9kTmr

A rumored Google Home Mini, the 2nd generation Pixel and Pixel XL, an updated Daydream View, and maybe “One more thing”. With the current rumors and leaks, it doesn’t sound like a good enough reason to turn off iMessage and migrate back to the Google hardware world.

That’s what I would need to be announced tomorrow to switch back. A conceptually, consistent messaging app that goes head-to-head against iMessage. Why iMessage? Because it’s the easiest way to communicate with my friends and family either they have an iPhone or not. It’s a great text messaging app that comes default on iPhones so there’s no question that the mass majority use the same app. This is why it’s easier to take advantage of all of imessages’ features. There’s no mystery to what text messaging app fellow iPhone users are using to communicate. “It just works.”

Simply put. It’s been an unmatched messaging platform on iOS for years now. Until Google can convince me that Google Allo is the wave of the future, or that Android Messaging will give me that rich experience that us iMessage slaves desperately love; I won’t be putting my iPhone down. Better yet, I’ll be getting the iPhone X by the end of the month. And I strongly doubt Google will announce anything remotely related to match up with iMessage tomorrow but one can wish. Until then, I’ll continue to use my iPhone and know that my friends and family would choose iMessage over me, any day of the week.

Some unverified Pixel 2 rumors from a new source who claims to have played with the Verizon Pixel 2.

Camera has added features like portrait mode but it looks like software induced blur (no dual lens system).

Pixel launcher crazy redone. Search bar below dock, Google home page has whole new design.

New feature that listens to music all the time so if there's a song playing in the bg it will put the artist and title on your lockscreen.

Squeeze triggers Assistant so it immediately listens to what you say. Works when device is asleep. Can adjust squeeze intensity like U11.

Dual speakers a la Nexus 6P.
Glass seems flat not 2.5D.

Again, I cannot vouch for the authenticity of these, but they seem plausible.
