Attack On Titan: Part 1 - Review

Films should be judged on their own merits and change is not necessarily a bad thing, but when the source material is so good in the first place one has to wonder why certain deviations were deemed necessary.

Shin Gojira (Godzilla: Resurgence) - Review

Shin Gojira (Godzilla: Resurgence), is a reboot which sees him return to his native Japan. Is it a case of the same old story, or can his Resurgence offer something fresh and new?

Alien: Covenant Red Band Trailer

The Red-Band trailer for Alien: Covenant is here. It may be Christmas, but the only bearded fat man in this trailer is Danny McBride. There is a lot of red though.

The Hallow - Movie Review

The Hallow is one recent example film which bucked the trend of ignoring the horrors of Irish folklore, but flew under most people’s radar. In it, we meet an English couple who have moved into a house in the Irish woodlands. Unfortunately for them, these lands are already inhabited by ‘the Hallow’, a sort of faerie folk who do not take too kindly to people trespassing on their forested sanctuary.

Fire and Ice

As an action-adventure film aimed at an adult audience, Fire and Ice features plenty of fighting and killing. While not overly gory, the film isn’t afraid to show off a bit of blood.

The Relic

The Relic, for the most part, sticks by the old rule of “what you don’t see is often scarier than what you do see”, holding off on showing the monster clearly until the final third.

Alien Extinction / Age of Tomorrow

Somewhere along the lines, Alien Extinction's Edge of Tomorrow ‘influences’ were mostly abandoned and the film took on a path of its own. That said though, instead of trying to rip off one movie, it tried to rip off practically every iconic sci-fi film that was made in the last three decades.

Stung

Stung is a recent enough entry to the ‘monsters run amuck’ sub-genre, its weapon of choice: giant rapidly mutating wasps who have taken it upon themselves to invade a high society garden party. Chaos and death inevitably ensue as a rag tag bunch of caterers, yuppies and an incumbent mayor try to put their differences aside in order to survive the onslaught. Yes, pretty much every B-movie (I would try to make a ‘bee movie’ pun but that would be taxonomically incorrect) trope is on show, but that’s pat of the charm.

Grabbers

A novel blend of action, comedy and scares, coupled with some seriously impressive special effects (all from a fairly modest budget of under €5million) and very quotable one-liners, Grabbers is a true piece of lost treasure.
