It is heartening to note that #MontrealProtocol on #ozone depletion is effective in controlling man made #chemical compounds (like banning CFCs) that were damaging ozone layer. As this article points out, a new area of concern has emerged. The #ocean surface #temperature increase does cause release of harmful #gases and ozone depletion. We already know that #globalWarming has adverse effects on climate and this finding has added a new worry. Hope global warming has the attention it deserves!

I never heard of the word "youthquake", though it was coined in 1965. As youth power is driving politics, societies and movements, it has got "the word of the year 2017" citation. It may gain adoption in other parts of the world as it was adopted in UK and New Zealand much earlier. India is endowed with highest youth population and this word may get frequent mentions here.

Significance of this flight is reuse of both #boosterRocket and the #spacecraft. Booster rockets recovered and the spacecraft carrying cargo is yet to reach #ISS (International Space Station). #Reusable booster rocket lands either on barge or on land whIle returning to earth. The recovered rocket would be ready for reuse after 24 hours, this article claims. The same can't be said of spacecraft. It falls on #sea upon return to #earth. The recovered spacecraft requires long time for inspection and replacement of some components that are affected by sea water entry. The article also claims that the booster rocket used in this launch would be used for the third time. Due to safety considerations, the reused rockets are used with less thrusts. SpaceX is definitely progressing well in reusable space vehicle rockets and spacecrafts. The early failures have been rectified and consistent successful results are observed.

I received a notification in my device today that "Hey, Google" command is available. I trained my Google Assistant. Now, I can wake up Google Assistant either by saying "OK, Google" or "Hey, Google". I don't use Google Assistant through voice conversation regularly. However, it is accurate in recognizing my conversation. The answers are not straight many times, instead provides relevant web search links. Google Assistant is still learning through AI.

"Solar Paint" Can Change Your Home Into A Clean Energy Source | @curiositydotcom

https://curiosity.com/topics/solar-paint-can-change-your-home-into-a-clean-energy-source-curiosity?utm_source=androidapp

Already we have seen development of #solarpanels in #film form. The next obvious step is to develop a paint that can be coated and used for #energy #capture. This article is optimistic of producing this paint for real world use in five years time. The article also claims that the new research is not only capable of capturing and converting solar energy to #electricity, but also producing #hydrogen fuels from moisture in atmosphere. There could be elaborate procedures in applying the paint that may be highly costly. I would like to follow up on this when a pilot project is launched.

#AirTravel is getting popular due to savings on travel time. Further, it is cheaper than #train travel in some places. #Cost and #time savings in travel makes it the first choice for #business travelers. Flight travels have a huge #environment cost. This is enunciated in this article. The proponents of #emissions controls are themselves contributing to it's degradation.
There are many areas we don't delve holistically on the problems at hand. For example, #Indian #Railways shifted from #steam locos to #diesel locos to #electric locos in order to increase #energyEfficiency and reduce #environmentalDegradation. However, the electric energy sourced are either from #coal or diesel power plants. Shift to renewables is more urgently needed.
#Holistic approach is essential not only in this case, but also in any issue.

#Speed and #endurance require better #balancing and coordinated #motoring. Any #sportsperson would vouch for it. #Robots have qualified now to move without tipping even in a very rough terrain. They have also developed to achieve higher speeds than earlier. While achieving speed, robots are spending huge #energy. They are not energy #efficient. Where can we learn to resolve this issue? It is from none other than our cohabiter, #cockroach, the never die soul. We can realize it's competency when we try to kill or capture it. The swiftness, the balance, squeeze of body through tiny openings are subjects that require greater study and adoption by #scientists. Robots would definitely benefit from our (permanent) guest, the cockroach!

Need a Lawyer? Artificial Intelligence Can Help. | @curiositydotcom

Yes. #AI (Artificial Intelligence) is slowly pervading in various activities. #Automation had already taken many #jobs done manually, though it's #decisionMaking is constricted to #preprogrammed #instructions. That limitation is removed by #selfLearning by #machines using AI. This article emphasizes that AI is trying to replicate humans on #emotions and #creativity. It is no wonder that it would eventually replace humans on every job situation. Is it scary or good to have it? Time will only answer!

The race is continuing for demonstrating sustained #nuclear #fusion reaction in a chamber that would theoretically provide unending #power. #ITER, the multi #governmental #project has announced that the fusion project is on track though delayed and expensive. It has reached 50% of the construction of the demo plant after a lot of changes in the designs. Many private companies are also in the research, but at a very low scale. They claim to have demonstrated to control plasma for a long period and at elevated temperature and pressure than achieved earlier. It is still in early stages of development. The design of reaction chambers pose many technical challenges and #scientists are overcoming them one by one slowly. Even with the best of minds, things may not work out the way it is aimed. However, if it is made possible, then it takes away the worries of cheap sustained environment friendly power delivery for the future. BTW, fusion #reactor has no possibility of runaway breakdown like in fission reactors. However, other safety requirements are required as the environment it operates is in millions of degrees of temperature. I wish ITER project a success though I may not live to see it working!

Any #manufacturing activity aims to achieve reduced #tolerance on dimensions to increase #accuracy, reduced #rejections, reduced #tooling including #moulds, fewer #components for the whole part, reduced #humanErrors and reduced overall #costs. #Automation has achieved many of these objectives to a greater extent, but it struggles on complex #designs. It seems #3DPrinting offers solutions. This article talks of manufacturing entire #spaceLaunchVehicle through 3D printing. 3D technology has some inherent weaknesses. The material may not have desired strength at weakest points. 3D printing is very slow as of now. New methods are being developed that tries through 2D nano layers. 3D printing technology is in it's infancy and a lot of development needs to take place. #NanoTechnology is helping this industry indeed. Intricate designs with tighter dimensional tolerance are the Hallmarks of 3D printing. Savings on time and cost are equally important goals for #spaceIndustry. Hope this project meets the success!
