Is that a racing stripe I see? Unlikely anybody knew what racing stripes were in the Victorian era, but there sure is something very distinctive about the heel of this design! https://goo.gl/IWZVTw Arnold Galleries shows this off.

Ice skates in the 1800s were often not blades attached permanently to specially designed shoes. They were strap-on affairs, sometimes even do-it-yourself creations. On occasion the shoes and skates separated....

Claude is gone, but the shoes he sold live on in this trade card for Jayne & Glann of Cortland NY. Dealers thought flowers sold shoes. They must have been right! Click the image to enlarge. New & improved! Shoes without holes in the toes were a big draw for busy mothers (especially for those with 18 children). https://goo.gl/eJePyy The horse-drawn shoe, however, had no future (with or without holes). Happily, no injuries were reported among the children that fell off the wagon.

Waterproof shoes? Either that or waterlogged, at this rate! From https://goo.gl/k03Igw comes this artistic flourish. It sold swans and fantasy, for sure, but perhaps not so many shoes....
