Baths of Varius - Ephesus (Eφεσος Ephesos; Efes)

The Baths of Varius are to the east of the Basilica, built during the Hellenistic and Roman eras, mostly in the 2nd century. A marvel of Roman engineering, restored and enhanced through the 5th Century, it was built from natural rock outcroppings and huge blocks of marble.

Reflecting the opulent times (and interest in hygiene), there were reading and sitting rooms, a 40 meter long hallway covered with mosaics, and a classical Roman Bath consisting of 3 sections: hot (caldarium) , warm (tepidarium) , and cold (frigidarium). "Frozen in amber" on Kodachrome. (Re-discovered today.)

Re-posting this - to join the collection. (I originally posted to an "album" before this Google collection.) Here, along the river, as described in the Bible, is the final home and alter of the Virgin Mary (Meryem ana). Nearby is the Grave of St. John.

NEW: I put this photo and many more into a 'slide show' video. There is a very slow change of photos, some with very clear detail, in this music/photography video. Popular music I recorded while I was in Turkey - and taking these photographs - is the sound-track. 100% authentic, from a time capsule! (1980's)

In the video there are many "new" images from Ephesus, Bodrum and the House of the Virgin Mary (Meryem ana). And some wonderful music of that day. (The first two songs are German pop hits I heard in Turkey; and then, 100% Turkish.)

Boats on the Bosphorus (1984)

Here is one of several prints I made long ago. (Photographed; the film negative is long disappeared.) I found this and some other prints and "slides" (Kodachrome) which I never made digital. This is a photo of my photo.

This is the ancient city of Ephesus, of great historical and religious interest. Here is where the Bible describes John the Apostle coming with Jesus' Mother Mary. This is the actual Grave of St. John, the placard describing how the site was visited and blessed by Pope Paul VI. This is the state of restoration in  the 1980s, the image preserved on Kodachrome (slide/diapositive/KM) film.

Nearby is the house of Mary (Meryem ana).

Built by Crusaders in the 15th Century using stone from the ruins of the Mausoleum of Mausolus, one of the original Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Another view from Çamlica Hill, Istanbul, preserved on Kodachrome, from long ago. The view is across the Asian side of Istanbul, the Bosphorus/Bosporus Bridge, into Europe. I posted an older scan of this in a group post, but here is a cleaner scan now. (More detail)
