Formal Beauty: at the oldest town square in Paris

A town square in a large metropolis is like an oasis. Rushed and deafened by traffic and city din, you make a turn and, out of nowhere, you arrive at the town square.
First of all, big sky: suddenly you are out of the grid and the shaded canyons of buildings and boulevards.
Second: greenery and, especially at an old square, majestic old trees.
But in this particular square, in the video, called Place des Vosges, you get a lot more: centuries of history and the sumptuous harmony of proportion in its architecture.
Let's visit!

A medieval village in downtown Paris

Cities, like epidemics, once they start growing rapidly, overcome everything in their way. No one person or entity ever decrees definitively the borders of a city; instead, like an ink stain on paper, cities spread chaotically, sometimes outward and sometimes back inward.
When things get ridiculous, authorities intervene to build ring roads, tunnels, green zones, overpasses and other afterthoughts to manage the chaos.
Once in a while, however, a miracle survives in the middle of all this mess: welcome to the medieval village in the heart of Paris!

Downtown Abbey: French-style

Right in the heart of Paris you can stroll around a real, wonderfully preserved aristocratic mansion.
Two courtyards (one for the horse carriages, the other for enjoying the greenery), statuary, heavy doors, oodles of rooms and hallways and all the "basic necessities" for a ruling class household.
If you fantasized visiting Downton Abbey but prefer French cuisine and a visit to Paris instead, you can now have both for the price of one!

Our electric car future starts here!

Imagine having an electric car, whenever you want it, super cheap, without having to worry about parking, filling it with gas and repairs:
- say you need a car to drive somewhere
- you tap this into the app
- the app tells you a nearby place to pick it up
- you drive the car (which can even play your favorite playlist) to your destination
- you park the car at a designated nearby place
- you forget about it! Next time it's gonna be a different car!

Imagine how much this would simplify your life while contributing to a better city environment.

Ashes: the new/old ingredient in healthy bread

Bread with ash is really black. Nothing to do with "black bread", which is, really, brown.
These French bakers are kneading ash into their bread dough because it is known to aid digestion.
The resulting baguette is still super chewy and tasty, plus it looks pretty stunning. Spread some green olive tapenade on a slice and you will see what I mean!

Is this the best dating app?

Sadly, for many couples Valentine's Day is Breakup Day as the pressure to make this special day work becomes "the straw that breaks the camel’s back".
For all of us singles, what is left to do than try yet another dating app? The one in my video, Once, has a catchy name: kind of like "Once upon a time..."
Or, even better, you only have to use this app once, and you found your prince(ss) charming.

What to do when snow hits the garden

A cold winter is tough on plants, which is why so many of them shut down for the season. Their main problem, however, is not with snow but with icy winds.
Snow, in fact, most often creates a protective, insulating layer around a plant, keeping it warmer than the howling wind, which strips moisture from the plant and can kill it by dehydration.
Snow can be a menace when:
- it falls out of season, when plants have restarted and sap is flowing once again and/or
- it is wet, sticky and heavy.
In both of these cases, accumulating snow can break major branches or even bring down an entire tree. That is when you can intervene to save your plants!

For the houseplant assassin: the papyrus solution

"Did I water it too much or not enough?" asks the typical houseplant serial killer, forlorn in front of yet another miserable victim.

If that fits your profile, give papyrus a chance: even the most clueless brown-thumber cannot kill this miraculous plant from the Nile Delta.

All the more reason to grow papyrus if you have kids for its educational value: not only paper but everything from sandals to boats used to be made with papyrus. And it looks great!

How to make sushi easily & without tools

Sushi was created to be a poor person's fast food, not a snob food. Think of it as a japanese sandwich. And, just like a sandwich, you make it to your taste, using your own favorite combination of ingredients.

Today, in under 7 minutes, we will learn to make the instantly recognizable:
- Maki sushi (巻き寿司) which consists of rice and other ingredients rolled together with a sheet of nori seaweed.

We will use no tools and only ingredients that are extremely easy to find:
- rice: you do NOT need sushi rice, in the video I am actually using basmati
- nori: the sheets of seaweed that you can now buy anywhere
- rice vinegar
- soy sauce
- carrots & radishes (or other veggie substitutes)
- mayonnaise: yes! they use mayo in Japan as well to make some sushi

Optionally:
- fish: you can buy fresh or smoked or, as in the video, just use a can of tuna
- wasabi: the spicy green radish condiment that burns!
- black sesame seeds

So, ignore all the purist blah blah blah about how sushi should be. Make your own, experiment! It is a perfect quick appetizer for your friends & family: people attack sushi!

Serve with a cold simple dry white wine or, better, with ice-cold sake!

Eaten by foxes: high mountain hazards

The chamois, a type of goat-antelope, is a fearless climber of the most rugged alpine peaks. During the freezing winter, it moves great distances in search of the struggling tufts of the grass it needs to survive.

This one, which I spotted a few days ago, must have slipped from the rock above. It was a young animal, in great shape, and the body was still warm: it must have fallen to its death within a couple of hours of my arrival.
Next time I passed by, nature had taken its inevitable course: foxes had torn it to pieces. Thus, nature recycles...

[There is a warning in the video just before the gruesome part in case you want to skip it]
